Beiu is the first!
After ten days of solo sailing, Jeremy Beiu, on a winged Charal yacht, was the first to cross the finish line, winning the Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d’Olonne race, ending one of the most exciting battles in the history of the IMOCA class.
Decisive for Beiu was the last 550-mile stage of the race – after rounding the Gallimard sign, he managed to bypass the leading Charlie Dalin at Apivia and keep the lead until the finish.
Moreover, in such a race, perhaps for the first time in the history of the class, just three riders claimed victory. Rounding the last brand third, Tom Ruan on LinkedOut managed to catch up with the leaders and even beat Charlie Dalin, but Beiu was unattainable for him.
Descending south, Beiu caught a strong north wind and flew to the French coast, only increasing the gap. At the finish line, he no longer had to worry about the pursuers, Dalin finished only after 50 minutes, and it took Rouen another 20 minutes to become third.
It was quite symbolic when Beiu after this “warm-up” race before the 2021 Vendée Globe, crossing the same finish line, came to his nose and threw up his hands in a victorious greeting. Of course, the rider himself and his boat are in great shape, and are ready to compete for victory in the coming round the world.
He spent 10 days, 5 hours and 14 minutes covering the Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d’Olonne distance, covering a distance of 3284.3 nautical miles at an average speed of 13.4 knots. A reward for him, in addition to a special chronometer from Ulysse Nardin, was his self-confidence before the start of Vendée Globe.
As of 10 a.m. (UTC) on July 15, 12 riders have already reached the finish line, five boats are still at sea and three have left the race.
