Komissarov won a license!
All is well that ends well. Sergey Komissarov was able to earn an Olympic license for Russia at the World Class Laser-Standard class championship that ended today in Sakaiminato (Japan).
But what did it cost Sergei? Recall, taking the day before, in two races on Monday, 41st and 33rd places, the Commissioners immediately dropped to 20th position in the overall standings. Medal hopes, alas, melted. But perhaps even worse, the chances of obtaining an Olympic license, which seemed so real, were in great doubt.
All decided the two final championship race, held today. In the first of them Komissarov finished only 30th. Now there was no place to retreat. The last race Sergey went out, as the last battle, – and …
And he became the third in it! What brought him the 17th place in the overall standings and the coveted license. Congratulations, Sergey!
Recall that in Sakaiminato had to play 5 trips to the Olympics. So they went to Sweden (Jesper Stalheim – 13th place), Argentina (Francisco Guarana – 14th), Russia (Sergei Komissarov – 17th), Hungary (Benyamin Vadnaya – 20th) and Guatemala (Juan Ignacio Maella – 22nd).
Oh, we forgot to name the one who got the gold of the tournament! And it got Olympic champion Tom Burton from Australia, whose advantage was so impressive that he won the race ahead of time, even before the last race.
It remains to add that Maxim Nikolaev took the 47th place, Daniel Krutskikh – the 71st.
