"Battleship" finished fourth
On March 6, Cape Town completed the first stage of the 52 SuperSeries of the new season. According to the results of the competition, the Italian Azzurra won the victory, and the crew of the Bronenoeets Yacht Club of St. Petersburg finished fourth.
The regatta, which took place over five days, was the first ever visit of a TP52 class fleet to the Southern Hemisphere. Prior to this, the 52 SuperSeries calendar was concentrated in Europe, and twice the series were held in the USA. In South Africa, ten teams from eight countries set off at the invitation of renowned German yachtsman and entrepreneur Hasso Platter, who plays in 52 SuperSeries with the Phoenix project under the flag of South Africa.
It was Plattner who led the standings during the first two days. But with the change in wind, the team lost to the winners of the 2019 season – the crew of the Italian Azzurra, who held the race amazingly stable and won by a margin of 6 points.
The host team had a chance to influence the situation, but on the final day of the competition, calm weather prevented the race. The results of the previous day were considered final.
For a boat flying the Russian flag, the first visit to South Africa was successful, despite mostly light winds, which are not the most profitable for a blue boat. The Battleship opened the stage and season with a second arrival in the first race and further won two more out of seven held. In general, the team lacked stability, and in the middle of the stage, the Battleship retreated to seventh line.
“We are pleased with the result, even though it was not easy for us,” says team manager Alberto Baroviere. “After a small rotation of the squad, we worked well on crew communication and coordination. The fact that we managed to win two races in difficult conditions for us suggests that we are moving in the right direction. "
At the end of March, the TP52 class world championship will be held here in Cape Town.
