The Dutch have chosen a woman!
The press service of the Dutch Team The Netherlands, one of six contenders for the America's Cup -2021, reported that the 45-year-old Karolijn Brower will be the steering team.
This is certainly a sensation and a breakthrough: women have never before become the helmsman of the America’s Cup teams. (Is that in 1995 the helmsman in the fully female crew of Mighty Mary was Leslie Egnot. But this team took part only in the then American selection, and quickly dropped out of the fight).
It is worth noting that the Carolyn Brower is one of the most reputable and titled yachting women in the world. So, she twice (!) – in 1998 and 2018 – received the Rolex World Sailor of the Year prize. Brouwer was a participant of three Olympiads (in classes 470, Europe and Tornado), but she didn’t climb the podium. And she participated in the Volvo Ocean Race three times, and last year she became the winner of this round-the-world race as part of the DongFeng RaceTeam.
