Muhonen out of competition
In Anzio (Italy) the draw of the Silver Cup was completed – this is the title of the world championship up to the age of 23 in the Finn class. Oscari Muhonen (Finland) won the gold medal for the second time (for the first time – in 2017).
Muhonen's advantage over his rivals was great – he secured his victory in the Silver Cup before the final, 11th race, which took place on Saturday. Nevertheless, the Finnish yachtsman won this race – and scored a total of 34 points. Spaniard Joan Cardona, who won the second place in the regatta, is 16 points more.
The winner among riders up to 19 years old was Slovene Liam Orel (100 points).
Now about the performance of the Russians. Mikhail Yatsun finished the tournament in 12th place (120 points), although he regularly finished in the top ten. He was let down by the fact that he did not finish the race twice, but once he saw a black flag in front of him.
Alexey Moskalev stopped at the 20th position (161). At the same time, we note that, for example, in the 10th, penultimate race of the regatta, he finished second.
At the end of the championship, the winner, Oskari Muhonen, in an interview stressed that he considers it unfair to exclude the Finn class from the Games-2024 program in Paris. According to him, this is an act of blatant discrimination against large-sized sailors – because they were deprived of the opportunity to perform at the Olympics. Approximately the same statements were made by other participants of the ended championship.
