"I wanted to test my skills"
Eight days, four stages, 130 participants and 195 races: The Academy of Sailing held a large-scale series of regattas for Virtual Regatta.
At the Virtual Regatta Academy Cup, more than 130 riders were divided into three age groups – initial training, training groups up to 14 years old and over 14 years old. A series of regattas consisted of four stages that took place every weekend, starting from April 11-12. Each stage consisted of a qualification and a final series. The finals were attended by 14-16 riders. Competitions were held on Star class yachts. In just eight racing days, 195 races were held.
In the youngest age category, from the very first stages, the struggle was between two racers – Ivan Davydov and Vileta Eremenko. After the first two stages, Vileta was in the lead, but two victories in a row brought Ivan a victory. In the final table, the athletes shared some two points. The third came Rodion Knyazev.
“Before the first stage, I was very nervous and doubted that I could go to the finals,” says winner Ivan Davydov. – After the first stage, I began to prepare hard, which my coach Alexei Petrovich Perevyazkin helped me with. The races were very intense. I did not expect that I would be able to come out the winner. During quarantine, the online simulator Virtual Regatta helped me develop strategically. I hope that soon I will be able to apply this knowledge on the water. "
In the age category – training groups up to 14 years old – the struggle for gold did not work. Andrei Shunenkov won three of the four stages and won by a huge margin in the series. The second finished OptiOrange Valencia 2020 bronze medalist Nikita Chernykh. Thus, Andrei managed to take revenge for the insulting defeat from Nikita at the All-Russian regatta "Electronic Sails 2020". But for the third line, a serious struggle unfolded between Alexandra Pika and Anastasia Babanova. Following the results of three stages, the girls scored the same number of points (15), but Alexandra was higher due to victory at one of the stages.
“I liked that the race was held every weekend,” says winner Andrey Shunenkov. – After each of the stages, you could take a breath, relax mentally, think about your mistakes and build a plan for the next race. I am glad that I managed to take a kind of revenge for second place at the Electronic Sails 2020 regatta.
In the oldest age category, three drivers simultaneously alternately led – Dmitry Tretyakov, Viktor Tarasov and Kirill Shunenkov. But while Dmitry and Victor are experienced racers who performed in the most prestigious Russian and world regattas, then Cyril was one of the youngest members of this group. Nevertheless, the age did not prevent Shunenkov Sr. until the last fight for the final victory. Only an unsuccessful performance at the final stage threw him to the third line. In the struggle of two experienced yachtsmen, Dmitry turned out to be a little more successful. After victories in the first two stages and failure in the third, he chose a restraining strategy and did not allow competitors to tear himself away. Such conservative tactics brought him victory as a result.
“I decided to participate in the Academy Cup because I wanted to test my skills after a long break without training on the water,” says winner Dmitry Tretyakov. – At the moment, virtual regattas are the only opportunity to at least somehow join in sailing. Starting from the third stage, there appeared guys who trained a lot and could compete. It became really interesting to chase. The task for the fourth stage was to walk next to those guys who stepped on my heels for the sum of the points. Having taken the second place, he secured a victory in all four stages. ”
