For the Russian team medal 52SuperSeries prestigious Royal Cup is the third award won in class ТР52. Previously, it was two silver individual phases in 2016 and 2017.
This season, after the fifth result in the first stage of Menorca, the Battleship is very confident held the second stage of the series, which for the first time in history took Cadiz.
The competition for the prestigious Royal Cup were held in predominantly light winds of the order of 10-18 knots. During the five days of the regatta, managed to hold 10 races, while “Battleship” only once finished outside the top five. Generally, the team of Vladimir Liubomirov were able to demonstrate stable results.
Moreover, before the final day of the Battleship was the head of the standings. But not everything went smoothly. The advantage of the team under the Russian flag over closest rivals was minimal – only one point to award-winning Italian Azzurra and four point advantage over the Turkish Provezza. Given the lack of emission of the worst result in the competition “super Series”, any team one through six could be the winner of the stage.
With the first race of the final day of the favourites got involved in a fierce struggle with each other. For “Battleship” this race was unsuccessful. Team risky tactic on a full course, but if on Friday it helped, Saturday didn’t work. As a result, the eighth ward and move from the first line to the fourth (and even with the tie-breaker with a German Platoon). And for the Russian team, and for others, all decided by a final, tenth stage of the race.
At this point, the crew of Vladimir Liubomirov managed to get together and have a great race. The third finish was a change in the top three – and even with equal points with the Italian Azzurra, which thanks to those two wins got “silver”. Both crew – Russian and Italian – gave the winner of Provezza just one point.
“The results speak for themselves: after ten races the top three were separated by just one point, says the steering “Battleship” Vladimir Liubomirov. – It was nice to win a medal stage after years of absence in class, but it’s a shame that the first ever Russian team to the gold medal stage of the “super Series” was literally at arm’s length”.
With the second and the first result in two completed stages of Provezza headed and GC 52SuperSeries. “Battleship” continued to occupy fifth place.
