Sorry, the record did not hold.
German Ernst-Michael Miller recently designed a small hydrofoil catamaran iFly 15 and decided to prove that his brainchild is capable of performing real offshore feats.
Moreover, Miller found like-minded people. The experienced professional yachtsman, 39-year-old Yo Wiebel and 21-year-old Tamara Baumann, recently tried to set the iFly 15 world record for crossing the English Channel (140 nautical miles from Causes in England to Dinard in France) for catamarans less than 20 feet long ( 6.1 meters).
The previous record – 19 hours 42 minutes – was set a little over a year ago on the Nacra F20. And, I must say, Wiebel and Baumann were close to success: after three quarters of the distance they went ahead of schedule. But…
Alas, luck turned away from them: the wind was completely sour. But Wibel and Baumann do not give up and intend to repeat a record attempt.
