Sailing Center in Sochi turns 40
The South Federal Center for Sports Training "South Sport", whose object is the Sailing Center, is one of the main centers for training the national sailing team for major international competitions, including the Olympic Games.
As emphasized by https://rusyf.ru, the center annually hosts regattas, championships and Cups of Russia, and yachtsmen of the national team of the country have the opportunity to hold training events here from October to May. This is the only federal base in Russia for competitions and training camps on sailing in the winter. This is also the uniqueness of the sailing center.
The history of the center of sailing in Sochi began a long time ago. In the mid-1950s, an initiative group of amateur sports created an amateur club DOSAAF for rowing, scuba diving, and all-around events. The place where the club was based (the future Sochi Yacht Club) was a simple coastal strip with a boathouse for storing rescue service equipment. In 1965, a thorough boathouse was built here, which became the place where the DOSAAF club was based, and the team received the status of the national team of the city of Sochi.
The main prerequisite for the creation of a training center for sailing was the need to provide conditions for year-round training of the USSR national team. Beginning in 1968, the training of the sports sailing elite began to be held on the territory of the Sochi Sea Port, and in the early 70s, a place was chosen for the construction of a permanent training base at the mouth of the Bzuga River, just at the place where the DOSAAF and Central School rescue station of the city of Sochi. The opportunity for grandiose construction appeared in preparation for the Olympics-80.
In 1975-1976, the USSR Sports Committee even considered the possibility of holding sailing competitions in Sochi as part of the 1980 Olympic Games, but in the end, Tallinn was chosen for this purpose, and a reserve base and a center for training yachtsmen were created in Sochi.
The training center for sailing of the USSR national teams was built in record time – it was built in three years. The passport from the state commission was received on May 29, 1980. This day is considered the birthday of the Sailing Center of the national teams of the Soviet Union.
“We believe that our yachtsmen will achieve high results and will adequately perform at competitions of various levels,” Mikhail Dremov, head of the Yug Sport Federal State Budgetary Institution, said in his congratulation. – We are very proud that in our institution there are not only Olympic heritage sites, but also historical sports facilities. We wish the veterans of the sailing center good health, good spirits, new horizons and great weather. Victories, medals and the highest sports achievements to Russian yachtsmen at various tournaments and fruitful work at the stages of their preparation. We will be glad to see you again at the facilities of our base. ”
