St. Petersburg State University Sailing Regatta, a traditional competition between universities of the world, will take place in the Neva water area on August 15-18. For the fourth time, the Alumni Association of St. Petersburg State University is holding this large-scale sporting and educational event, anyone can become a participant and spectator of it.
In St. Petersburg, young yachtsmen from universities in China, the UK, Belarus, Lithuania and the Netherlands will meet, as well as more than 20 teams from Russia, including experienced participants in the alumni race.
The regatta will be held in the city center, in the waters of the Neva at the Peter and Paul Fortress.
This year, the organizers are preparing a coastal program on Hare Island: meetings with famous yachtsmen, lectures on the history of marine traditions of St. Petersburg, screenings of documentaries on iconic races, great geographical discoveries.
Multiple winners of international competitions have already confirmed their participation in the coastal program: Igor Zaretsky – the only Russian participant in the round-the-clock non-stop race of the Golden Globe Race singles: Irina Gracheva – the first girl from Russia to become a participant in the single transatlantic race MiniTransat; Oleg Zherebtsov is the founder of the SB20 Russian Yacht Association and a member of the Volvo Ocean Race round-the-world regatta.
All guests of the event, for whom training sites will be equipped on the beach of the Peter and Paul Fortress, will be able to try to arm the vessel, get the sheets and, most importantly, master yachting terms.
“Today our regatta is the world's largest student sailing competition. In addition, this is a very important element of international dialogue and student diplomacy, ”emphasizes the curator of the project Denis Kotlyarov, former captain of the St. Petersburg State University team, master of sports in sailing.
The races at the Peter and Paul Fortress will last four days, the last of which will be devoted to the alumni contest. This is a tradition that helps to make sailing attractive for young and novice sailors, and also supports the link between generations.
Competitors will be teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Imperial College (Great Britain), Qingdao University (China), Delft University (Netherlands), Clausthal Technical University (Germany), Vilnius University (Lithuania), Graz Technical University (Austria), HSE, Moscow State University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and other leading universities of the world. Many of them have already repeatedly competed in St. Petersburg for the title of best, last year's triumphs are returning, which makes the fourth regatta even more exciting.
The captain of the team of the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth and Tourism, Bogdan Babenko, explains the popularity of the event: “This is the fourth time we are going to the SPbSU regatta. Firstly, this competition makes sailing more accessible. Secondly, there is a high-quality coastal program waiting for participants and spectators: if we talk about the regatta as a sport and leisure, the St. Petersburg State University Cup is unique. ”
The organizer of the regatta is the Alumni Association of St. Petersburg State University, the event is held with the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation.
