Alas, and VAKE 2020 …
As we know, one of the most difficult winter long distance kite marathons VAKE (Varanger Arctic Kite Enduro) is also canceled. It was supposed to take place in Norway in early April. The reason was not the abnormally warm weather, which we have been accustomed to recently, but the pandemic of the coronavirus Covid-19.
Here's what the race organizers today posted on their Facebook page: “Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has no choice but to cancel VAKE 2020. We apologize to our teams, our volunteers, our partners and the entire community. Varanger.
In recent weeks, we have worked hard to make VAKE happen by offering alternatives to local health authorities. But now the situation is out of our control. VAKE is responsible globally and locally for the safety of our teams.
Globally – as we all must minimize travel between countries to prevent the further spread of the virus. Locally – because we must take measures to prevent the spread of the virus in eastern Finnmark, where there are no outbreaks of infection yet.
For the safety of our teams, all ambulance staff in Berlevog, Vadsø and Vardø have canceled all planned events and are on standby. Without them, we cannot organize VAKE safely.
We hope that we will be able to organize VAKE 2021 and will be back full strength next year!
Take care of yourself, follow the advice of the authorities and wash your hands often! ”
