A million went to the Australians
The first draw of the SailGP series super final on F50 high-speed catamarans ended in Marseille with the victory of the Australian national team, which won an unprecedented prize in the history of sailing – it got a million dollars!
In the Sunday Super Final, as we expected, the teams of Australia and Japan came together. At the same time, both crews were led by famous Australian skippers – Tom Slingsby (Olympic champion 2012 in Laser class, eight-time world champion in different classes, winner of the America Cup 2013, holder of the title of Best Yachtsman of the Year 2010) and Nathan Outterwich (Olympic 2012 champion in class 49er, winner of 19 world championship medals in different classes, skipper Artemis Racing in two draws of the America Cup).
At one point in the super final, the case almost ended in a collision (this moment is captured on the video), but – lucky. The teams were only 78 centimeters apart, and the Australians were 0.05 seconds slower to be in trouble. Fortunately, nothing happened.
Final standings of the first season of SailGP:
1. Australia – 229 points
2. Japan – 223
3. China – 171
4. Great Britain – 169
5. France – 164
6. USA – 163
The second season of SailGP starts on February 28 – 29, 2020 in Sydney (Australia).
