“Great joy to ride through the winter!”

Those who regularly visit our Facebook page already know about the success of Russian athletes at the WISSA 2020 World Winter Sailing Championships. But here are additional details from the press service of the Sailing Academy of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

“Great joy to ride through the winter!”

In the waters of the Finnish lake Lestiyarvi, the WISSA 2020 World Championship ended on February 14. Initially, Estonia was supposed to take the regatta, but due to the fact that winter did not arrive in most of Northern Europe, it was decided to transfer the competition to the northern Finnish town of Lestiyarvi.

The organizers have created the almost impossible. For some two weeks after the decision to postpone the World Cup, they managed to prepare an event of international scale. The competition was attended by 100 riders from 12 countries.

In the course-skiing – skiing class, Nikita Kodanev, an athlete at the Academy of Sailing and Krestovsky Island, won. In 15 races, he did not fall below the second line and earned 16.9 points. A stubborn struggle was imposed on him by another Academy driver Roman Lyubimtsev, who lost less than three points to Nikita.

“The last races turned out to be quite tense, because there was a very small difference in points between the leaders,” says Nikita Kodanev. – All the guys chased cool. Many thanks to the organizers for being able to reschedule and organize the competition in a short time. Finland had very good conditions, both in terms of organization and weather conditions.       More than two thousand sailing ships of various classes yesterday took part in the famous Barcolana regatta, which was held for the 51st time this year, in Trieste (Italy).

Alas, the colorful race, which has long held a record for the number of participants, was summed up by the weather: the wind did not exceed three knots, and although the distance was reduced, only half of the 1076 ships that started could finish.

The winner of the race was the 80-foot Way of life maxi yacht with Slovenian Gaspar Winchets on the helm.

      “We did a great job!”

The results of the world championship in the RS: X class, which was held in St. Petersburg, for the Facebook Youth Sailing Team page on Facebook were summed up by the senior coach of the youth team Anastasia Chernova and other characters.

“We did a great job!”

Here is what Chernova said: “The youth team in RS: X class among the girls performed very well in St. Petersburg. The gold medal of Yana Reznikova became the crown of the work of the entire national team in this class. The guys went through very good training – someone was able to perform better, someone was worse, but, nevertheless, the gold in the female RS: X proves that we are moving in the right direction. Her personal qualities, the character of a leader and a fighter, faith in her victory and willpower led to this victory.

Anastasia Shchedrina performed very well. I think if at the beginning of the regatta someone said that Nastya would take such a high 5th place, no one would believe. For her, this is the first international competition in the RS: X class. The athlete did not have big victories in the Techno class, so the 5th place is a high and very worthy result in the new Olympic class. Dana Kosyak took 11th place, which is quite good.

The remaining athletes of the youth team were, in my opinion, below their capabilities. Maybe with the weather they were not entirely lucky, maybe they themselves were not fully tuned in to these races. Of course, for most of the guys the lack of international experience in participating in major competitions is affecting.

I want to thank all the athletes, coaches, who trained the guys together with the team and independently – at home! "We did a great job and the gold medal of Yana Reznikova – our common result!”

… Let's once again recall the events of the last race, but already through the eyes of our athletes.
On the final day of the World Championship, the calm weather hardly helped to concentrate, because everyone wanted to show their maximum, regardless of which fleet they were to play in. The calm was replaced by a wind of 5-6 knots, and the windsurfers of the gold and silver fleet, as well as the fleet of girls, got off to the start. Only the top 10 remained on the beach, preparing for the decisive – medal – race. Among them was the “dark horse” of the Russian team – Anastasia Shchedrina.
“Of course, we all dreamed about a pedestal, but I did not expect that I could really manage to enter the top ten at the world championship! It was just unbelievable! Before the medal race, we had time to take a break, get together, while the rest of the participants walked the distance of the final race. But during this time we could only get more nervous. And I managed to get together just 10 seconds before the start … ”- recalls the athlete.

At the competitions, she improved her results every day – from the 23rd position she climbed to the 7th and confidently moved to the 5th. The girl was able to surprise in the final – medal – race. Nastya fought in the top 3, which, of course, played into the hands of Yana Reznikova, who was faced with the question of who would win this world championship.

Before the medal race, Frenchwoman Manon Pyanazza overtook the leader of the Russian national team by three points, and a lot was decided on how the race went.
“When Yana took the start, we were very worried about her, but after the first loop she had a decent margin, and her rival was not going very well,” said Anton Tokarev, who supported our athletes with the team.
“When I realized that I could not only take part in the medal race, but also compete for the first place – emotions captured, but I had to pull myself together, calm down and start working. I was able to do all this. Overcome even some fear and enjoy this race. In competitions I gained a lot of experience, especially in terms of tactics, thanks to the analysis immediately after each race. She began to better understand the wind, to see gusts. It was tactical literacy that was of great importance in the medal race, where the opponent’s control and understanding of the best side, as well as the availability of a plan are important, ”Yana Reznikova summed up this at the end of the world championship.

Congratulations to Yana and all the trainers who helped and trained the athlete with a gold medal!
All athletes and their coaches – with great success and good results in the world championship!

      A license is great! But…
In the Japanese city of Sakaiminato today ended the world championship in the class "Laser-radial". Gold regatta went to Anne-Marie Rind from Denmark. This is her you see in the pictures.

A license is great! But...

Now Anne-Marie is a two-time world champion: we recall that before that she won in 2015. In addition, the Danish – the bronze medalist of the Games-2016 in Rio.

Following the results of five qualifying and six final races (with two outliers) Rindom scored 50 points. The second, 36 points behind (!), Was the name of Marit Boumeester from Holland (she’s the 2012 silver medalist of the 2012 Games in London, the champion of the Rio Olympiad and also the three-time world champion). Finally, the bronze at the representative of the UK Alison Young – 89 points.

Our Ekaterina Zyuzina did an important job by winning one of those ten Olympic licenses for Russia that were being played out in Sakaiminato. This is of course great! Only now Ekaterina took only 45th place (242 points), which, alas, does not give reason to be optimistic about our Olympic prospects.

Our second representative, Valeria Lomatchenko, speaking in the Silver Fleet, is in 85th place (273 points).

It remains to add that Elena Vorobieva (now Croatia) settled in the table at the 20th position.

The final results of the championship –

P.S. At the same time, the World Championship in the Laser Radial class for men ended in Sakaiminato. As we reported, it was a strange tournament: 32 yachtsmen participated in the regatta, but only 6 of them were foreigners, the rest 26 were local, and Japanese. However, for lovers of statistics will let you know: Simon de Gendt (Belgium) got the gold. Immediately behind him – the other five foreigners, and then – 26 Japanese in friendly ranks.

      Great forgotten brave
According to the American website www.twincities.com, Jerry Spis died at the age of 80 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Great forgotten brave

This news did not cause much interest – even in sailing circles. Well, he died … What is, in fact, surprising: in the late seventies – early eighties of the last century, Spis was a world famous sailing celebrity.

In 1979, on the self-made yacht Yankee Girl, he single-handedly crossed the Atlantic, and two years later – the Pacific Ocean. America both times met him as a national hero. Yes, he was a hero!

Just imagine: at the length of his Yankee Girl was only 3.05 meters. In width – 1.67 meters. Baby

Grimace of fate: the years passed and the great brave Jerry Spis was forgotten. Even in his homeland. It happens.

Peace be upon you

And if you want to know more about this amazing person, then here is the link. Our magazine once published a great essay about Spies –
