      Vendee Globe: doubts about the launch date

But the situation with the pandemic, by and large, is getting better, and therefore the organizers of the Vendee Globe have doubts that the start of the round-the-world can be held at the appointed time. This is due, firstly, to the fact that quarantine and other tough measures to combat COVID-19 significantly complicated the preparation of future participants for the race, and secondly, to the fact that, according to tradition, at the launch ceremony in Le Sables Hundreds of thousands of fans are gathering d'Olonne, and in the current conditions this is absolutely unrealistic.

In parallel with the “R.E. Alekseev Cup” on August 6-7, in the Sokolsky water area, the children's test “Small Cup of Alekseev” was held in the Rocket-270 yacht class. On Thursday, August 8, with a long route race, participants returned to the Belaya Rechka yacht club, where on August 9 and 10 three more races took place.

Throughout the regatta, the weather tested the participants for strength. Fresh wind, rain and rather low for August air temperature added races to races. Unfortunately, not everyone managed to get through the regatta to the end: four boats dropped out of the competition due to breakdowns.

The 2019 Russian champions were the crews of the Mig yacht (Nizhny Novgorod, captain Andrei Khaidukov) in the Quarter-ton class and the Globus yachts (St. Petersburg, captain Andrei Nikandrov) in the Open800 class.

The Rostislav Evgenievich Alekseev Cup was won by the crew of the Shalun yacht this year (Moscow, Lomonosov Moscow State University, captain Victoria Veselova).

      Mecca sails vote for Golden Globe Race
      The authorities of Mecca of the French sail, Le Sables d’Olon, in the department of Vendée, unanimously voted for the round-the-world Golden Globe Race to return to their city in 2022, as in 2018.

      GOLDEN GLOBE RACE: the latest news

      GOLDEN GLOBE RACE: Passion for rigging

Although Jean-Luc's yacht was allowed to race after checking for compliance with the rules, some people had doubts about the acceptability of the modifications he made. In particular, it concerns the use of a mast shortened by 1.5 meters.

Don confirmed that such a modification complies with the rules of the race. At the same time curious detail surfaced.

You remember that after an incomplete tumbling through the nose on the mast of Jean-Luc's yacht, the fastening of the guys in the middle of the mast was seriously damaged. The bolt, on which the cable fastening rests, began to shift downward under load, widening the standard hole.
It turns out that before the start, Jean-Luc wanted to use 6 mm of the guy instead of the regular 8 mm. The rules allow only strengthening rigging. Use thinner guys Jean-Luc was not given.

Jean-Luc assumes that if the guys were thinner, then at the time of the roll they could stretch a little, spring. The load on the fasteners would not be so great, and the probability of receiving damage would be less.

Who knows … The arguments of Jean-Luc sound reasonable. Don is considering amending Technical Regulations # GGR2022.
