4,580 miles left to London
The race with the time of the French skipper Francis Jouillon and his crew of 4 people has been going on for 18 days, the goal of which is to set a new world record on the classic route of the Tea Race from Hong Kong to London on the IDEC Sport maxi trimaran.
Passed 9536 nautical miles (average speed – 22.2 knots). 4580 are left to finish under the Elizabeth II bridge on the Thames. Now, IDEC Sport is 681 miles ahead of the current record, which has been owned by Italian Giovanni Soldini on Maserati Multi 70 for two years now. Of course, this is not bad in itself, but Zhuillon and Co. hoped that the gap from the Maserati schedule by this time will be greater – about 800 miles.
Plans were broken primarily in the past 24 hours, for which IDEC Sport covered only 389 miles (average speed – 16.2 knots). The movement is hindered by the high pressure zone in the area of St. Helena, which is now being approached by the team of Zhuillon. It is planned to bypass the island from the north – and continue moving to the northwest, bypassing the calm stripes.
