Here’s a personal experience from a class “Dragon”. Ten years ago 80% of the days in which it was impossible to hold the race, had the calm weather. Season 2019 demonstrated the reverse: almost all of the fallout from the graphs regattas were associated with very strong wind and waves. Cannes, Cascais, kühlungsborn, Medemblik, Mallorca, the South, West and North of Europe.

The August calm of the Western Mediterranean gave way to lingering storms, and harsh winds and wave in the Bay of Biscay has forced almost two weeks to postpone the start of the race Mini-Transat.

And here is what they write… meteorologists climate Change began to have an adverse impact on sailing. The temperature rise of the oceans and the air have led to increased frequency of hurricanes. In the entire history of observations 2016-2019 become the most prolonged period in which every year has witnessed the most devastating hurricane of the 5th category. Most still in memory “Irma” and “Maria” that destroyed the yacht is moored and destroyed the Charter fleet in the Caribbean.

Famous Navigator, transatlantic ARC race organizer Jimmy Cornell has analyzed the General trends in the long sailing journeys: “Information gathered from 50 of the most attractive destinations for boaters, show that the peak long-distance voyages was in 2010. The number of boats crossing the Atlantic and going through the Panama canal, is reduced. The same trend is observed in Australia, New Zealand and in Tahiti.”

The safety of navigation is threatened not only more rigid weather conditions. The world has become in General less safe. Risks are now not only with the passage of the Northern Indian ocean and the red sea, but the danger comes from the shores of Venezuela, Brazil, Honduras, and East and West Africa, from certain regions in the Caribbean.

However, increased number of boats, enveloping Cape of Good Hope, and increasing popularity of the routes in the high latitudes. So, if in 2010, 55 yacht dared to make the voyage to Spitsbergen, in 2019, there were already 72. And the number of voyages through the Northwest passage over the years has doubled from 7 to 14.

There are other good news. The quality of the weather forecasts and satellite communications improved markedly, gaining popularity around the world collective rally. Hiking in the fleet, which takes care skilled onshore team, significantly reduces the risks.

In any case, the basis of the security in good marine practice to master that we wish all the readers of our magazine.

Peace and a happy 2020!

The world has become less secure

Here is a personal experience from the Dragon class. Even ten years ago, 80% of the days in which it was impossible to conduct races fell on calm weather. The 2019 season showed the opposite: almost all the drops from the regatta schedules were associated with a very strong wind and wave. Cannes, Cascais, Kuhlungsborn, Medemblik, Mallorca … South, West, North Europe.

The August calm of the western Mediterranean gave way to lingering storms, and the brutal wind and wave in the Bay of Biscay forced the Mini-Transat race to be postponed for almost two weeks.

But what meteorologists write … Climate change has begun to have a negative impact on sailing. An increase in the temperature of the oceans and air has caused an increase in the frequency of hurricanes. In the entire history of observations, 2016-2019 became the longest period in which a hurricane of the most destructive category 5 was observed every year. Most of them still remember “Irma” and “Maria”, who destroyed the yacht marinas and destroyed the charter fleet on the islands of the Caribbean Sea.

The famous navigator, organizer of the transatlantic ARC race, Jimmy Cornell, analyzed the general trends in long-distance sailing trips: “The information collected from the 50 most attractive places for yachtsmen indicates that the peak of long-distance sailing came in 2010. The number of boats crossing the Atlantic and sailing through the Panama Canal is decreasing. The same trend is observed in Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. ”

Safety is not only threatened by more severe weather conditions. The world has become generally less secure. Risks are now associated not only with the passage of the northern Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, but the danger comes from the shores of Venezuela, Brazil, Honduras, as well as East and West Africa, from some regions of the Caribbean.

True, the number of boats enveloping the Cape of Good Hope has increased, and the popularity of routes in high latitudes is growing. So, if in 2010 55 yachts dared to travel to Svalbard, then in 2019 there were already 72. And the number of sailings through the Northwest Passage doubled over the years – from 7 to 14.

There is other good news. The quality of weather forecasts and satellite communications has improved markedly, collective round-the-world rallies are gaining popularity. A hike in the flotilla, which is sponsored by a qualified coastal team, significantly reduces the risks.

In any case, the basis of safety is good marine practice, which we wish all readers of our journal to master.

Peaceful and happy to you 2020!

John Sanders: 11th Round the World! https://yacht-express.net/john-sanders-11th-round-the-world/ https://yacht-express.net/john-sanders-11th-round-the-world/#respond Tue, 07 Jan 2020 10:32:16 +0000 https://yacht-express.net/john-sanders-11th-round-the-world/ Read more]]>

Today

John Sanders: 11th Round the World!
Yesterday, 81-year-old Australian John Sanders reached Cape Town, where he decided to stay for repairs and relaxation. As we previously reported, in early November, this incredible Australian veteran skipper set off from Fremantle on his ELEVENTH circumnavigation!

John Sanders: 11th Round the World!

Sanders went on a hike on the yacht Perie Banou II, and the motto of his current trip is No Plastic Waste Voyage.

For our new readers who have not heard of Sanders before, here are some facts from our previous publications.

The Australian crossed the Pacific Ocean 12 times, the Indian – 14 times, the Atlantic – 12. Cape Horn went around five times, the Cape of Good Hope – 11 times. Seven times participated in the Sydney-Hobart race.

He generally loves racing. In 1979, he signed up for an offshore regatta in Rio de Janeiro. And after the race I thought: is it worth returning home to Australia in the same way – through Cape Town? And headed north to go through the Panama Canal.

So – unexpectedly for himself – Sanders made his first circumnavigation. Liked. At the same time, the second, which began in 1981, was non-stop, solo (like all subsequent ones), and, most importantly, double. That is, he made two straight turns in a row.

It should be noted: only five round-the-world Sanders were non-stop. In this century, he prefers to make a stop or two. Far from always, Sanders chooses classic routes. So this time, having left his native Fremantle, he first went to Mauritius, and then headed for the Cape of Good Hope.

In one of the notes about this incredible Australian, we gave a story that we will now repeat with pleasure.

On March 13, 1988, having circled the planet three times and spent 678 days at sea, Sanders returned to Fremantle. Friends feared that such a long loneliness would badly affect his mind, so they decided, going to the side of his yacht, not to speak with him first to understand whether he recognizes them or not. The sailor was the first to break the gloomy-silent solemnity of the moment, shouting to one of his friends in his usual style: “Hey, blockhead, have you put on this stupid hat again ?!”
