Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image 2020 kicks off!

Recall that Yacht Russia magazine is an information partner of the contest. We are extremely pleased that the number of Russian photographers participating in it is growing every year. The level of their work is also rising. Both in the past and the year before last, the authors of 6 of the 80 images selected by the international jury were our compatriots. There is something to be proud of!

This year, 80 pictures will also be selected – this will happen on October 15. Then, voting on the Internet will begin, which will last until November 10. The author of the picture with the most votes in this online voting will receive the so-called Public Award.

We go further. On October 29, an international professional jury will decide who will become the owner of the main prize of the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image 2019, and will also select 20 pictures that will be exhibited on November 23-24 in Portsmouth (UK) where the annual Yacht Racing Forum will be held these days. Its participants will determine by voting the winner of the third prize – Yacht Racing Forum Award.

And there, in Portsmouth, the winners will receive their prizes!

Will L’Occitane make a difference in ocean racing? https://yacht-express.net/will-loccitane-make-a-difference-in-ocean-racing/ https://yacht-express.net/will-loccitane-make-a-difference-in-ocean-racing/#respond Sat, 15 Feb 2020 11:43:47 +0000 https://yacht-express.net/will-loccitane-make-a-difference-in-ocean-racing/ Read more]]>

      Will L’Occitane make a difference in ocean racing?

In early February, a new Open 60 (IMOCA) class yacht, the L’Occitane, designed by Sam Manor for Armel Tripon, was launched in France. She became the seventh – and so far the last IMOCA class boat – built for the Vendée Globe 2020-21 race.

Will L’Occitane make a difference in ocean racing?

The new yacht is distinguished by the radical design of the bow – it is made in the spirit of the famous American scow boats and in recent years has become more and more popular in a number of racing classes on the high seas: for example, Mini 6.50 and Class 40. (Interesting in this regard note that, firstly, Sam Manor has already managed to successfully “make a mark” in both of these classes: for example, in the last TJV race his Class 40 yachts took second, third and fourth places, and secondly in the same race the number of yacht fleets The Class 40 with scows was already nine pennants.)

The exact technical data of L’Occitane, as usual, is a secret. A number of observers note that the new boat is likely to become one of the narrowest in the fleet, in addition, it will obviously have a length on the waterline less than that of most competitors. But at the same time, almost all agree that the length of the hydrofoils for the new product will be one of the largest (if not at all the largest) in the entire Open 60 fleet.

The only thing that can really let the L’Occitane team down is timing. There is very little time left before the first race of the season – from Brest to Charleston, the start will take place on May 10. If something goes wrong, there simply may not be enough time to repair or modify the yacht before the start of the Vendée Globe.

But nevertheless, the main question is most interesting – how successful will this design be in the winged class Open 60 now?

      Today – Medal Racing

In Togliatti in the Kuibyshev reservoir, the Russian championship in Olympic yacht classes is coming to an end.

Today - Medal Racing

According to the website of the VFPS, on Tuesday all the planned races were held again: in the classes 49 and 49 of the FX – four, in the classes "Finn", "Laser-standard", "Laser-radial" and 470 – three .

“The wind was about 15 knots, with gusts of up to 20,” said Natalya Ivanova, head coach of the Russian team. – It was not in vain that we chose the water area of the Kuibyshev reservoir: these days we managed to see athletes in different winds. For a long time the championship did not take place in such conditions. Today did not bring any surprises – in the first positions all the same athletes.

As for the upcoming medal races, the intrigue remains in the classes "Finn" and "Laser Radial." In the class "Laser-standard" there is a tight fight for 2-3 places. "

Answering a question about the weather conditions in Togliatti, Sergey Komissarov, the leader by a wide margin, said: “We must be able to walk in any weather! Current conditions are rare in the national championship. In recent years, it took place in Sochi, and the weather there didn’t spoil us. In general, the end of the season, the championship of Russia is a very important stage, because it is a kind of control cut-off. I am pleased with my parishes. It can be seen that this year both Maxim Nikolaev and Daniil Krutskikh, who compete for 2nd and 3rd places in the class, added. ”

“Today the weather was very fresh, the wind was 7-12 m / s,” said Mikhail Ushkov, the helmsman in the 49th class. – During the race, several crews left the race, only six remained. We came in the middle, the parishes are stable and good. "13 races were held downwind at 15 knots – this is a very good championship!"

Championship leaders following four racing days:

49th – Jan Cech / Ivan Zotov

49th FX – Zoya Novikova / Diana Sabirova

Finn – Arkady Kistanov

Laser Standard – Sergey Komissarov

Laser Radial – Maria Kislukhina

      The first day of the Russian Championship passed without racing
      On August 28, the Russian Sailing Championship in international classes started at the Yacht Club of St. Petersburg.

The first day of the Russian Championship passed without racing

Competitions are held in six classes: "Laser 4.7", "420", "29th", "Techno", "RS: X" and "Nakra 15 – mixed". There are three distances on the regatta: “yellow” – for classes “420” and “Laser 4.7”, “green” – for classes “Nakra 15” and “29th”, and “red” – for classes sailing board “ Techno ”and“ RS: X ”.

287 young athletes from 36 cities of Russia take part in the regatta. Yachtsmen's age: from 11 to 20 years. Even athletes from Belarus arrived to participate in competitions in St. Petersburg.

Most participants for the Championship of Russia in international classes were declared in the class "Laser 4.7". For the victory in this discipline 95 riders compete. Before each race day, athletes are randomly divided into two fleets. After the qualification, they will form a “golden” and “silver” fleet (48 – “golden”, 47 – “silver”) and will be chased directly by the fleets.

At the opening ceremony, Elena Solovyova, Project Manager of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, addressed the participants of the competition with a welcoming speech:

"Dear friends! We are pleased to welcome you to the Yacht Club of St. Petersburg. Welcome to our beautiful city and our yacht club. It is a great honor for us once again to host the Russian Sailing Championship. We know that this regatta is a great test for each of you and an important step in your sports career. Therefore, we wish you all good luck. For my part, I promise that we will do our best for you to return from this regatta with the best memories. ”

The first day of the regatta did not please the riders and organizers with a fresh wind. On Wednesday, calm was in the waters of the Neva Bay of the Gulf of Finland, a wind force of 0.5-1 knots did not allow for a single race.

“Sailing always depends only on wind and weather,” says Vladimir Komel, the chief judge of the competition. – We still expect a better forecast, because the wind that the weather forecasters promised us has fallen. We’ll catch up tomorrow. St. Petersburg has become very unpredictable in the last two to three years. The wind may appear suddenly and also end unexpectedly. The Yacht Club is the most difficult water area in our country, where it is very difficult to predict the change in wind and current. It will be very difficult for young riders to understand the wind conditions. The fight will be tough, everyone wants to win high places and get into the youth team of Russia. "

Based on the results of the competition, the national teams will be determined in the appropriate classes, which will represent Russia at international regattas in 2020.

The program of the Championship of Russia in international classes:

August 29 – September 1 – racing days
12.00 – start of the first race.

September 1 –18: 00 closing of the competition, rewarding of winners

September 2 is the day of departure.

      Junior Match Racing World Cup Completed
      The race committee still hoped that in the early morning, as it was the day before, there would be wind in the waters of the Verkh-Isetsky pond. Therefore, it was decided to change the racing program and start the race at seven in the morning.

Junior Match Racing World Cup Completed

Unfortunately, the forecast was confirmed, and the wind did not exceed two knots, which was not enough for the races.

Nevertheless, the international rules of match racing allow you to take stock of the regatta with the results of all matches held. As a result, the victory and gold medals were very deservedly assigned to the Australian team, which on the first day of the championship pulled ahead.

Somersault racing

The fourth stage of the international SailGP series ended in Kaus (Isle of Wight) with the victory of the Australian team, which, among other things, set a record at the finish of the first race, having reached a speed of exactly 50 knots!

The stage was shortened: because of the gale, the competition on Saturday, August 10, had to be canceled. The next day, the wind speed was already lower – “only” 25 knots, but this was just enough for three teams to bite their nose after the first sign and damage the F50 catamarans already in the starting race on Sunday.

The main losers were the owners: the British damaged the catamaran, barely reached the finish line and did not take part in the other two races of the day. In contrast, the Americans, although they accomplished something resembling somersaults, were nevertheless able to continue the competition. The third damaged team was the Japanese – she lost one of the "coffee grinders".

The Japanese (in fact, in the composition of this team for the most part the famous Australian riders) took second place at the stage, but lost their leadership in the overall standings: Australia beat them. And ahead is a decisive stage in Marseille (September 20-23).

Recall: according to the rules of SailGP: the winner of the series receives a million dollars. The rest do not get anything.

Results of the SailGP Kausa phase

1. Australia – 1-1-1, 30 points;

2. Japan – 2-3-3, 25 points;

3. China – 3-2-4, 24 points;

4. France – 4-5-2, 22 points;

5. USA – 6-4-5, 18 points;

6. United Kingdom – 5-6-6, 14 points.

Amount for the season (after four stages)

1. Australia – 169 points;
2. Japan – 165 points;
3. USA – 123 points;
4. United Kingdom – 120 points;
5. China – 117 points;
6. France – 115 points.
