Yasinda Arder made concessions
Under pressure from the public, the New Zealand government was forced to partially open borders. That will allow members of teams participating in the America Cup to enter the country.
Recall how it all began. To start training at the venue of the Cup as early as possible (it will be recalled that it will be held next spring), the American team American Magic decided to send its AC75 Defiant to New Zealand by the end of May. A freighter with a boat on deck is due to arrive in Auckland on June 20.
And then there were problems. Because it turned out: the boat will arrive, but the team itself will not. And it is not known when it will be able to arrive. The fact is that the New Zealand government, headed by Yasinda Arder (you see it in the photo next to the America’s Cup) categorically refused to open borders for anyone to enter the country, closed as a measure to combat coronavirus . And he emphasized that he was not going to do this in the near future.
There was a scandal. The Americans were offended – and accused the New Zealanders of an unfriendly attitude towards their main allies and at the same time of unsportsmanlike behavior. The New Zealanders, for their part, have long been pretending that all these accusations do not make any impression on them.
But water, you know, whetstone. Under pressure from the public, the government of Yasinda Arder was forced to soften his position – and allowed the entry into the country of “a certain number of particularly necessary workers”. Including those related to the America Cup. American Magic can send a team to New Zealand with a total of 102 people, as well as 104 members of their families. At the same time, the British INEOS Team UK received the right to send 86 employees, and with them 128 family members and even one nanny.
All is well that ends well. When the AC75 Defiant boat arrives in Auckland on June 20, there will be someone to meet her.
