"Wrong tactical decisions were made."
The leading Russian driver in the Laser Standard class Sergey Komissarov, in an interview with the press service of the Sailing Academy of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, spoke about the World Championships in Melbourne, summarized his performance at the regatta and announced his immediate plans.
– How do you rate your performance at the World Cup in Australia and the final 24th place?
– While I flew from Melbourne to Dubai for 14 hours, I analyzed the races, situations, decisions a bit and came to the conclusion that the result is not so bad, taking into account the mistakes that I made at the regatta. In fact, during this period of time I always feel a little unprepared – not physically or technically, but in terms of getting into the race.
– During the regatta, you thought about fulfilling the selection criteria for getting into the national team at the Olympics? Distracted by rivalry with your competitor for a trip to the Games by Maxim Nikolayev?
“Of course, I kept this in mind, but I did not feel the excitement or pressure in this connection. World Cup – it's about something else! This is about competing with the best racers in the world, about how to show your maximum and rise as high as possible. I love Laser for the enormous competition. In addition to the top riders, there is a large layer of good, motivated athletes who impose a fight at each section of the race.
– For most of the regatta, you confidently walked in the top 20 strongest. Why didn’t you succeed in holding positions on the last race day?
– Wrong tactical decisions were made when analyzing the weather. As a result of these mistakes, I rolled back to line 24, but I am very pleased that people regard my 24th place as a failure, which means that I proved that I am capable of a more serious result. This is genuinely nice!
– What are the goals and expectations of the regatta for the Princess Sofia Cup?
– The answer suggests itself. The goal is to qualify for the Olympic Games.
“This week you will finally spend at home.” Glad after numerous gatherings and regattas to return home and stay with family?
– It's no secret that I spend very little time at home, even when I train in Russia. For me, spending time with my family, relatives and friends is priceless and very expensive. They are my motivator, an example of masculinity and determination. Together we go to the goal.
