Himself being an Olympian, I understand that you are experiencing in these days. You want to concentrate on training and competition and do not want to be distracted from the process of preparation for the Olympic games in Tokyo. After discussing the situation with who, government of Japan, organising Committee of the Olympic games, with the leadership of Metropolitan Tokyo and the authorities of other countries, especially with China, I can assure you that we are hopeful to open the Olympics in Tokyo on July 24. We continue to monitor the situation and consult with experts.
We know how difficult the qualifying period, and what flexibility is required from you and your national Olympic committees and international federations.
Some of you had to change the plan of training, competition and travel. I personally want to thank you for your understanding and concessions. This is the Olympic spirit.
I also want to assure you that we, jointly with the national committees and federations, trying to find the best solution to this problem, to ensure a fair selection process under the circumstances. We also continue to receive daily reports and listen to the advice of the who.
