In connection with the problem of the spread of coronavirus host the Olympics in Tokyo is still in question. In this regard, the IOC President asked the athletes with gratitude for your understanding and flexibility.

Himself being an Olympian, I understand that you are experiencing in these days. You want to concentrate on training and competition and do not want to be distracted from the process of preparation for the Olympic games in Tokyo. But, unfortunately, the coronavirus is really a serious problem for all. Needless to say, this was the main topic of discussion at the IOC Executive Board in the last two days.

After discussing the situation with who, government of Japan, organising Committee of the Olympic games, with the leadership of Metropolitan Tokyo and the authorities of other countries, especially with China, I can assure you that we are hopeful to open the Olympics in Tokyo on July 24. We continue to monitor the situation and consult with experts.

We know how difficult the qualifying period, and what flexibility is required from you and your national Olympic committees and international federations.

Some of you had to change the plan of training, competition and travel. I personally want to thank you for your understanding and concessions. This is the Olympic spirit.

I also want to assure you that we, jointly with the national committees and federations, trying to find the best solution to this problem, to ensure a fair selection process under the circumstances. We also continue to receive daily reports and listen to the advice of the who.

With the help of a special platform Athlete365 we will keep you informed of events that you were best able to adapt to the situation and focus on the Olympics.

I hope that with this support, you will be able to concentrate fully on the preparations for the Olympic games. Then we will once again be able to unite the world through competition. That’s what makes the movement so unique, and you as the main actors, inspire billions of people around the world.

See you at the Olympics in Tokyo!
