They attacked Cook. And at the same time on Drake
Cook and so the natives ate – but the current advocates of the fight against any manifestations of racism are few. Apparently, the Cook Islands will have to be renamed.
As a RIA Novosti correspondent reports from London, British activists, against the backdrop of the worldwide campaign against racism, which began after the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of the police, have prepared a list of monuments to be demolished, and institutions and streets that need to be renamed, from their point of view.
The site, with the eloquent title Topple The Racists, features, among others, the names of former Prime Ministers William Gladstone and Robert Peel, sailors James Cook and Francis Drake.
"We believe that these statues and other memorials to slave owners and colonialists should be demolished so that Britain finally recognizes the truth about its past and how it shapes our present," the website says.
Activists consider initiating public discussion as their task.
“It is important to shed light on the continued praise of colonial icons and symbols,” they point out.
Demolition of monuments, renaming schools, streets and pubs is offered throughout the country: the location of unwanted elements is indicated on an interactive map, and site visitors can expand the list.
