The taming of the light

Each of us probably had at least once in your life to observe a situation where, say, friends, have invested in expensive repairs, nicely finished apartment or a country house, but the situation did not look in any way not no advance thought, what lighting will make her sparkle, will make the atmosphere of coziness and will again and again to surprise and delight guests and hosts. On superyachts experienced designers, this issue is receiving particular attention, however often their bold ideas rested in the absence of original lighting fixtures and existing technologies to highlight.

Deck jewels

One of the interesting concepts that was presented at METS 2018 British company Savage Lighting is called Deck of Jewelry, which means “the deck of the jewel.” The idea is to clothe a practical function of lighting in non-trivial design belongs to the Studio Van Geest Design, and Deck-based Jewelry — multi “crystal” with a height of about 200 mm, enclosed in a “tube” square section the perimeter of which the illumination based on LEDs. The shape of the crystal, in fact, repeats the Newtonian prism, and made them masters of one of the best companies in the world for the production of custom products from glass, Crystal Caviar.

The essence of Deck Jewelry is that integrated in the deck module penetrates through it and acts as a skylight for the space below. If you look at it from the top when the lighting, the look will drown in the endless light tunnel like a mirror in which the play of colored light beams. Built-in LEDs emit a neutral white light, but due to the dispersion on the faces of a prism it splits into all the colors of the rainbow. The room below while it is impossible to see, even when there’s a light Deck so Jewelry does not violate privacy. Day crystal works like a regular skylight, holding in natural light.

  • When you look at the Deck visible Jewelry endless light tunnel, in which play the rays of all colors

At the top of the unit flush with the deck using silicone mounts a scratch-resistant protective glass. It’s laid on a rubber base, which is waterproof and allows you to step on Deck Jewelry. Because teak deck sanded periodically and over time it becomes thinner, the design of the module, there are special pads that you can alternately take out, adjusting the height of the protective glass under the deck.

Deck design Jewelry scales easily to decks of any thickness, so the customer only needs to provide the manufacturer the exact dimensions of the modules. The number and layout of “deck jewellery” limited only by the wishes of the owner of the yacht and imagination of the designers. In the future, this concept can be developed in modules Deck Jewelry embedded in the bulkheads, and extremely diversified range of design solutions for new and undergoing refit yachts.

Big wonders of small diodes

Completely different scale and a different level of work with creative lighting Herman Ter Hennepe, founder of Maramoja Projects. Most of his projects for public spaces on land, but the yacht is also included in the scope of his professional interests. So, Herman Ter Hennepe participated in the development of the concept Oceanco Moonstone and proposed a non-trivial idea of the pool-the transformer with a complex LED lighting that can be synchronized with music or other “indicators” mood.

“If the light sources are constantly in the same environment, say, in air or in water, to create conditions for their optimal operation is not a problem, he says. But if work conditions change, then the problem becomes much more complex. This situation arises when you need to illuminate, for example, a pool whose bottom rises to deck level and becomes a dance floor. Here you need to carefully select appropriate materials that do not degrade in dry and wet environment, and electronic components, capable to protect from overheating.”

To ensure safety and the desired effect the bottom of the pool is covered with a thick (50 mm) layer of a special durable light-diffusing plastic, the surface of which is non-slip and scratch resistant. Below that is the air layer (60mm), which directly operate LEDs. If the water temperature in this pool rises above +40 °C, the backlight automatically turns off, as the electronic components although temperatures up to +70 °C, but working at a temperature not exceeding +50 °C. When the pool is not in use, the plastic also serves as a thermal barrier and does not allow the scorching sun to overheat the electronics.

“The durability of the diodes depends not only on their quality and the correct wiring diagrams, but also on how pre-programmed their work, explains Herman Ter Hennepe. We are putting all the diodes at 80% capacity, so they never reached peak efficiency, and it significantly extends their service life”.

Maramoja Projects rarely use standard solutions. The company independently designs all the lighting for each order, not just to fulfill the whim of the designer, but to make the system safe and energy efficient. One of the vivid examples is the incredible chandelier in Parisian art space. The building on Rue Wave where’eléphant Paname, built during the reign of Napoleon III, the Russian diplomat Prince Alexey Saltykov nicknamed Indian. Big fan of art, he ordered in the Central hall of the stained glass dome in which there are 4,500 glass plates. Maramoja Projects was necessary to duplicate his chandelier so that at each node of the stained glass was installed RGBW-led and artificial lighting would not interfere with the natural.

“LEDs themselves are quite small, but they need food, and it is dozens of meters of wires that needed to hide, — says Herman Ter Hennepe. — The building is historic, and drilling the ceiling was forbidden everywhere except at several points. We conducted three-dimensional scanning of the dome, to know to the millimeter the position of each glass, and then made a lightweight carbon fiber frame of the 13 elements in the thickness of 5 mm, which are already indoors glued together. On the frame fixed diodes, electronic components and paved all the wiring, and then lifted her under the dome”.

With light Internet

Progress is moving towards the use of light as a medium for high speed transmission of information, and it is possible that those who designs and manufactures lighting systems, pretty soon will have to take into account this important new feature. Thanks to Li-Fi (Light Fidelity — the way of communication using visible light) lighting, including decorative, one day it will become a tool for Internet access, much superior to the Wi-Fi capabilities.

The basis of Li-Fi lies invisible high-frequency brightness change of the LEDs, which registers the compact photodetector. As a receiver can be a conventional photoelectric cell, is able to simultaneously receive information and to produce energy. Li-Fi provides two to three orders of magnitude greater speed of information transfer than Wi-Fi, and with this technology the Internet of things can take on entirely different scale.

The company pureLiFi has already introduced the first USB receiver Li-Fi two-way communication that allows you to keep the connection when switching from one light source to another.

Now this technology is on the verge of release to the masses, and it is making a big bet. Attentive to the innovations of yachting industry, too, will not remain on the sidelines, and I think in the near future we will see the first boats, which will be not only beautiful, but smart light.
