The owner of Monaco is the world champion!
Sport-Express writes about a sail once a year or even less. But now – wrote. And all due to the fact that the yacht of the owner of the Monaco football club Dmitry Rybolovlev won the World Championship in the ClubSwan 50 class. And football, as you know, for the SE editorial office is a sacred cow:
In the Nations Trophy competition, which was held from October 8 to 12 in Palma de Mallorca, the winner in the ClubSwan 50 class was the team of the owner of the Monaco football club, Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, on the Scorpios yacht. The competition was held for the second time (the first took place in 2017).
In the Nations Trophy regatta, held in four classes, 41 sailboats from 14 countries took part (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Holland, Norway, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain). Russia at the regatta was represented by Battleship Vladimir Lyubomirov, Scorpios Dmitry Rybolovlev and Daring sisters Maxim Titarenko.
According to the Italian edition of Pressmare, the final day of the competition was very dramatic, as the weather allowed only one race in all classes to be held. The Scorpios Rybolovlev team won the world champion title in ClubSwan 50 class. Fever yacht Klaus Diderich (Germany) pulled out the champion title in Swan 45 class in a bitter struggle. The Italian yacht Mela, in ClubSwan 42 class, goes home in the champion rank, and the Thirty- yacht Six Edoardo and Riccardo Ferragamo (Italy) won the ClubSwan 36 class regatta for the first time. Thanks to the results of Cuordileone yachts, Leonardo Ferragamo and Ulika Andrea Masi sent this year the Nations Trophy to Italy.
Scorpios first showed chaotic results – second, and then fifteenth place – and was far from the podium. Everything changed on the third day. Scorpios showed a phenomenal result, winning two out of three races. On the final day of the competition, only one race took place. Yacht Perhonen could not show a high result, and a relatively modest fifth place allowed Scorpios to win the world title, ahead of the nearest pursuer 12 points.
Scorpios skipper Fernando Echavarri, Olympic champion and two-time world champion, was impressed by the outcome of the regatta. “Today we had to work very hard in weather conditions that we are not used to – with waves and a medium-high wind speed of 16-17 knots,” he explained. – The guys did a fantastic job. I am proud of the whole team. We had very good starts, we were fast, and the owner (Dmitry Rybolovlev) stood very well at the helm. ”
And here is a fragment of material published on the website of the Yacht Club of St. Petersburg:
– The “Battleship” of Vladimir Lyubomirov held the championship unstable, starting from the sixth line, then being on the 11th, finished, in the end, the ninth, right behind the crew of the King of Spain, missing Don Felippe with a one point deficit.
“Unlike most fleet teams, for us the world championship was the only competition in the ClubSwan50 class this season, which affected the result,” says Vladimir Lyubomirov. – This factor worked together with the uncharacteristic weather of Mallorca, which we know well. And the fleet this year is much stronger than at the 2018 championship. Of course, somewhere it was possible to go better, somewhere tactics failed, but overall, together with Scorpius we became the third in the “Nations Cup” and it’s nice. ”
