People, forever changed the idea of a vacation on the water
No matter how you spent the day on the water touring, fishing or just soaking up the sun — thank the inventors, without whom it would have been impossible! Here are five people who helped to make the world of yachting as we know it.
OLE Evenrud
Evenrud OLE (Ole Evinrude) invented the first outboard motor after slow boating his wife’s ice cream melted.
Everyone whose boat is installed an outboard motor, need to pay tribute to Ola Evinrude and, oddly enough, quickly causea ice cream. It all started that day when Evinrude went with his wife on a picnic to the lake Okochi in Wisconsin (USA). The man swam for ice cream on a rowing boat, which melted before he returned to his wife. This little nuisance has inspired Ola, who was a mechanic, and repair of internal combustion engines, to create a compact engine for the boat. In 1907, there appeared the first gasoline engine capacity of 1.5 HP of brass and steel, which can be installed on the transom. The invention came a few years later, in 1909.
Evinrude E-TEC G2
Engine power E-TEC G2 is at least 100 times greater than that of the original model Evinrude. While most competitors choose four-stroke technology, and Evinrude two-stroke engines with direct injection produce a ton of torque, while matching the modern standards of emissions and requirements for fuel economy and noise levels.
To protect the fruits of their labor, Evinrude sent a patent application for his invention, and received it in 1911. The number of this patent was secured for the same period, the company Evinrude Motor Corporation. In 1913, OLE sold his stake in the company to the business partner and retired for five years. In 1919 he returned to his original design and improved it, created a hinged aluminum motor with the capacity of 3 HP and weighing 21,77 kg. He proposed a new model of its old company, but there is to cooperate with him did not want to. Then OLE decided to sell their engines and founded for this Evinrude Light Twin Outboard Company (ELTO).
In 1929, ELTO, Evinrude and Johnson Motor Corporation Motor Company joined forces to create Outboard Marine Company. The new company developed the design of the outboard engines and revolutionized the field of small boats. Today, the owner Evinrude — Bombardier Recreational Products. But even now the company still remains the leader in the production of two-stroke engines.
Rudolf Diesel
Smart enough to use the gas for compression-ignition fuel, Rudolf Diesel (Rudolf Diesel) has opened an effective tool to create high torque at low rpm.
Installed the diesel engine on Board the battleships that sail the seas, or power boats who dared to travel to distant Islands — it is a vital component for ships leaving port for a long time. Inventing compression engine, Rudolf Diesel changed the course of history and opened up new possibilities for industrial shipbuilding, automobile and even aviation. Although the ability to travel long distances for fun — it’s just a good additional option, without it, the sailors will not do.
Yanmar 3JH40
The system of direct fuel injection (“commonrail”), in which the pump pumps the high pressure fuel in a common line, and electronically controlled injectors to regulate the injection of fuel into the cylinders, significantly reduced diesel fuel consumption at the same time reducing the level of noise, vibration and emissions. New engine Yanmar 3JH40 received the prize of the National Association of shipbuilders for its innovation — is the world’s smallest diesel generator type “commonrail”. Power three-cylinder diesel engine at 3000 rpm is 40 HP, and it weighs 191,8 kg.
Diesel began working on the design of a more efficient engine than the prevailing in his day, the steam engines that wasted most of his energy during combustion of fuel. He suggested a compression engine. Instead of igniting the fuel in the piston by the spark as it occurs in gasoline engine combustion, diesel engine uses pistons to compress the air inside the cylinder, creating intense heat, from which the fuel ignites spontaneously. Diesel got a patent for his idea “motor with rational dissipation” in 1893 and introduced the world to its single-cylinder four-stroke engine with a capacity of 25 L. S. in 1897. As explained Diesel himself, “as the air is compressed, and the combustion temperature is higher, the gases give you more energy after combustion, creating more pressure on the piston and crankshaft”.
The diesel engine was much more efficient and could produce high torque at low revolutions, making it ideal for movement of heavy loads over long distances. It’s also great to pull the wave 15-meter, sportfisher, which goes from the Bay behind the Marlins.
Jim Wynn
Jim Quinn (Jim Wynne) proposed the idea of a swing-out speakers Volvo Penta, which set them on their engines and changed the face of recreational yachting.
While OLE Evinrude and — later — Carl Kiekhafer (Carl Kiekhaefer) Mercury Marine has made recreational yachting mass using the outboard in the 1930s through the 1950s, industry representatives and enthusiasts of racing again changed the rules of the game, popularizing swing-out column. Ironically, Wynne invented the first engine with the sterndrive when I was working on a guru outboard motors Mercury Marine. According to the company, Wynn was employed from 1953 to 1958. It is known that he secretly worked on the design of columns under the direction of renowned Executive Director of the Mercury Charles Strand (Charles Strang), who actually first proposed her idea back in 1948. The owner of Mercury Marine, Carl Kiekhafer rejected the concept, so that the Strands worked with Wynn in secret. In 1958 Wynn left the company and started to assemble a prototype column of the parts outboard motor in his garage in Miami (USA). Then he went to Swedento propose an idea to the President of Volvo Penta, which she liked so much that he has signed with Wynn the license agreement.
Volvo Penta Forward Drive
In response to the growing popularity of wakesurfing and the demand for more affordable family yacht, on which they engage, Volvo Penta turned the screws to the nose. The screws in this system, pull the boat on the water, not push it. C screw propeller, which rendered 53.3 cm further forward than when it is mounted facing aft on the rack surfers to safely ride the waves behind any boat.
At the new York yacht exhibition in 1959, Wynn presented to the public the first “front wheel drive” system Volvo Penta Aquamatic connected with the engine to 80 HP Being an enthusiast of yacht racing, Wynn also worked with Don by Aronova (Don Aronow) on a project that later became a respected motor yacht Donzi Sweet 16. In 1961 joined Mercury Marine, and boats with swivel-suspended steel column to capture the market. In the next decade of yacht racing enthusiasts began to abandon outboard motors in favor of the swing-out columns, because the design allowed shipbuilders to mount larger, more powerful engine blocks directly into the housing and connect them to the actuator. Outboards just could not compete with them for power. Soon petrol engines with sterndrive become widespread as family boats and mid-size cruisers. Time outboards are gone forever.
Leo Benz
Developed by Leo Benz (Leo Bentz) was the first fiberglass boat to water ski revolutionized the sport, so as to minimize Wake and allowed to follow directly behind the vessel.
Water skiing existed before the advent of wakeboarding, wakesurfing and all other modifications of this sport. Ralph Samuelson (Ralph Samuelson) invented it when I was on a lake in Minnesota (USA) in 1922, and learning to stand up on a pair of skis behind the family boat soon became a water rite of passage. The attractiveness of water skiing is that you can ride them almost for any boat, but to ride at the highest level, you need a special boat. And here is Leo’s Benz and goes on stage.
Super Air Nautique G23
After decades of attempts to minimize a Wake for water skis, Nautique boats now building, which remains as a large footprint, which is needed for wakeboarding and wakesurfing. The Nautique Surf System (NSS) creates a big wave, you just click a button plate for surfing, which increase the displacement G23 and help shape the wave, turned around. With touchscreen panel can also be connected to modern help system the steering and control the ballast.
Decades best skiers prefer to follow wooden punts in which the engine is inside the boat: the Central position of the motor and a small pellet was allowed to provide more uniform thrust, and a smaller Wake. In search of competitive advantages for the higher levels in 1957, in Miami (USA) – Benz developed the design of the first fiberglass boats with built-in motor. He called it a Ski Nautique. To appreciate the idea of Benz invited a friend shipbuilder from Florida Correct Craft Malono Walter K. (Walter C. Meloon), which was known as a Builder of military transport boats during the Second world war. First of Melun rejected the project, saying (as the legend), I never saw the “wood fiberglass”. Benz continued to work on its design Ski Nautique and turned again to Malono in 1961. At this time, Correct Craft has agreed to buy a Nautique drawings and begin production of the model. In 1961, a 5.5-metre Ski Nautique is equipped with stationary engines at 185 or 215 HP, was sold at the price to 3 $ 845. As stated in the original brochure, “special design case Nautique makes it incredibly small Wake at speeds suitable for jumping and slalom, and a great wave for tricks at low speeds”.
C. Raymond Hunt
C. Raymond hunt (C. Raymond Hunt) was a genius of design, whose creation, enclosure type “V deep”, helped to create a faster boat with a better stability in marine environments.
Probably nobody has had such a strong influence on the modern yachting, as C. Raymond hunt naval architect, who designed the first hull of the type “deep V”. A native Duxbury (Massachusetts, USA) began working with design of sailboats and maralung courts in the 1930s and experiment on increasing the deadrise in the 1940s. he designed in 1958, a seven-meter wooden tender with a distinctive 24-degree angle of the transom, sponsons and sharp cheekbones and sharper keel and lower part of the stem, which many call the first true deep-V hull. This began a revolution in the design of motor boats, because this form allows you to cut through the water, making the boats move gently and the ship itself — morehodniy.
Hunt Yachts 32 CC
Today based C. Raymond hunt and his partners Hunt Yachts owns a Hinckley Yacht Company. Boats are still produced in Portsmouth (Rhode island, USA). 32 CC is a beautiful entrance into the world of the Central consoles.
In 1960, dick Bertram (Bertram Dick) built Moppie and 9.4-metre-long boat, which had been based on the original tender of the hunt, which he won in the then-known race, “the Miami — Nassau”. Bertram turned this boat later became the famous Bertram 31 — the model is made of fiberglass, which are still hunted by fans of classic boats.
However, Bertram was not alone. Hunt also participated in the design of the original four-meter Boston Whaler in 1957. His design Agency C. Raymond Hunt and Associates was founded in 1966 in partnership with John Deknatel (John Deknatel), who still runs the company. The Agency participated in drafting many famous shipyards, including Chris-Craft, Grady-White, Robalo, Southport, Grand Banks, Four Winns, Cruisers, Regal, and many others.
