The yacht that made a splash at boot Düsseldorf 2020 … Understanding the features of the new flagship model Cranchi 78.
In Italian, Settantotto means 78. But this is not just a number – this is the most innovative 78-foot yacht Cranchi, released for the 150th anniversary of the Italian shipyard. 78 feet, or 24 meters – in any case, these numbers represent a significant step towards the superyacht segment. The new model is already available for test drives at the Cranchi Test Center, and the next delivery date is February 2021. As befits a flagship, the yacht is impressive in both design and performance. But, in addition to the outward showiness, Settantotto has many secrets – innovative solutions that cannot be found on yachts of this length, or not seen anywhere else.
Hull design
In the segment of planing yachts up to 100 feet, the most common material of construction is fiberglass. It’s no secret that all shipyards are fighting for the minimum weight of the yacht to reduce fuel consumption and increase its autonomy, but Cranchi stands out against this background in that it uses the perfect combination of kevlar and carbon – the hulls are both very strong and lightweight. In addition, the hulls of Cranchi yachts are not subject to osmosis: thanks to the technology of baking the hull in a special oven, it is a multi-layer monolith, in the middle of which there is a reinforcing layer of carbon. DuPont robotic paint finish gives the case a luxurious look and keeps it for years. You can choose from ten color options for the body, in whole or in part.
Plus, even the Cranchi’s flybridge models are sporty. For this special thanks to Christian Grande, who creates designs that are both classic and modern. A smoothed profile, where no line is knocked out of the ensemble, but without sharp corners and aggressive minimalism – this is his signature.

Open decks
The first portion of surprises can be found barely stepping on board, or rather, on the bathing platform. Firstly, the mooring lines: they are wound on the winches inside and go out through the holes at the stern, which means they do not rub against the sides during anchorage. When the mooring lines are not needed, they simply twist into the hull, and there is no need to put them in the locker. A similar principle, only with a slightly more complex mechanism, was applied to shore power cables: they are wrapped in a system of rollers that allow the cables to twist freely, fitting into rings in a cylinder in the engine compartment, without tangling or knotting.
The bathing platform itself has three positions (“run”, beach club, “underwater”), it is lowered and raised hydraulically and can withstand a load of up to 1100 kg, which allows you to keep additional equipment on it. However, there is no particular need for this, given the size of the garage on board the Cranchi Settantotto. This is one of the key advantages of the model; frankly, it’s hard to remember what other yacht of this length has a garage, into which both an impressive tender (up to 4 m) and a large jet ski, and there is still room for Seabob and other water “toys”. When the equipment is on the water or in a garage, the platform can serve as a kind of “beach club”; there is even a rain shower in the “roof”, which is formed by the raised garage door.
Another spacious seating area is located at the bow; it consists of two parts: a sofa and a table closer to the windshield and an extensive sun lounger in front. Under the lounger there are lockers, and above it, if desired, an awning is placed on removable carbon stands.
Finally, the main place to relax in the sun is the flybridge, where from the cockpit there is a convenient gangway on the port side with a correct slope. The flybridge is also correctly zoned: in the stern there is a free area where you can arrange sun loungers and take a fine shower. Ahead – a helm station on the left side and a sofa / sunbed on the right side turned forward “facing”. And in the center is a dining area with a bar shaded by a hardtop. It is equipped with electric shutters that allow you to regulate the amount of sunlight. They can be closed and opened completely by pushing a button by sliding the slats to the extreme position.
Interior and layout
The interior has a homely atmosphere of coziness and luxury at the same time, and this is a significant advantage for serial yachts: only natural materials of finishing plus a lot of possibilities for individualization of style – this is what the specialized Cranchi atelier is doing. At the same time, the external beauty is complemented by a functional layout, where time-tested methods are supplemented with unusual new solutions, and, of course, the “smart home” system. The interior space is “cut” so as to provide both comfort and maximum privacy for the owner and his guests: the zones and routes of movement of passengers (8 people) and crew (3 people) practically do not intersect. On many yachts of this length, such a separation has not yet been found. For example, the galley is often located aft, at the junction of the saloon and cockpit, to provide an open space for communication.
Settantotto used a “superyacht” layout: a fully enclosed galley was moved forward, closer to the helm station, forming with it a dedicated crew area. By the way, in the same area there is also a daytime bathroom, which is rarely found on yachts of this length. The crew can get into their cabins (aft) without disturbing the guests in the saloon and cockpit: there is an exit from the galley to the starboard side, and the entrance to the crew compartment is arranged from the left side deck, under the ladder to the flybridge.
Main deck saloon. The interior can be completely customized by creating an absolutely unique yacht with the help of the Cranchi design studio. And the smart home system will add even more comfort
All guest cabins aboard the Cranchi 78 are extremely spacious and bright

VIP cabin in the bow of the yacht
In the saloon, with panoramic windows, the dining area is located in the center, and the lounge area is located at the entrance from the cockpit, where there is another al fresco outdoor dining area. Naturally, these zones can be combined by opening the sliding doors, which are very unusual on the Settantotto – with an angle: one of the sections opens from the stern, the other from the side, from the side of the ladder to the flybridge. An unusual solution so far, but perhaps very sensible: you can let fresh air into the cabin without opening it from the stern; but if you remove both doors, the opening area is greatly increased. The doors move along guides that form a rather high side between the cockpit and the saloon. Usually everyone advocates a flat “floor” at the junction of the cabin and cockpit, but at the Cranchi shipyard they thought that this would additionally protect the cabin from possible water ingress in the rough sea (it will simply leave the cockpit through the drainage system): after all, Settantotto is an ocean boat class “A”, and in the ocean everything happens.
There are four cabins on the lower deck. The master suites are traditionally located in the widest part, midships. Very cozy and spacious, this cabin also has an unusual detail – a separate corner with a seat and a table that can be used for both makeup and work. There is of course a separate dressing room and a spacious bathroom. Between the master cabin and the engine compartment is the owner’s bathroom, and then the crew quarters. Three bulkheads between them guarantee silence: according to the shipyard, the noise level even on the move does not exceed 48 dB (A). The VIP cabin is usually located in the bow, and two more guest ones are on the sides; each is equipped with its own bathroom and wardrobe.
Control posts
The Settantotto has two main posts and one auxiliary in the cockpit. It is convenient for mooring aft, but in principle it is not necessary: the other two – on the main deck and flybridge – are equipped with cameras that allow you to control the dimensions of the yacht. Another important point is the ability to choose a convenient side for mooring depending on the conditions in the marina: the helm station on the flybridge is located on the port side, and on the main deck – on the starboard side. Three huge Garmin touchscreens provide all the information you need at once, and the electronic ship control system (EVC) closely monitors what is happening. By the way, there is another screen in the captain’s cabin, so that many systems can be controlled directly from there. And the fact that the boat is equipped with Volvo Penta IPS speakers implies not only the joystick control for quiet “parking” in any weather, but also a dynamic positioning system (digital anchor). The boat can be fixed at a point without a physical anchor: the columns will steer the position on their own, which is convenient for calm release of mooring lines or where anchoring is prohibited.
Driving performance
The partnership between the Italian shipyard Cranchi and the Swedish company Volvo Penta has been going on for over half a century. It is not surprising that the new flagship received the advanced engines of this brand. In addition, the Settantotto is the first Cranchi model with a triple installation of the most powerful 1000 hp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1350 to date. from. every. With their impressive power, they are quite compact and, accordingly, do not need a large engine compartment. The shipyard calculated that the installation of these systems with rotary bottom columns and coaxial counter-rotating propellers added about 50 sq. m of habitable space on board compared to the installation of diesel engines of comparable power on the shafts. Due to this, a huge garage and a full-fledged room for the team appeared.
Roll stabilizers
The Cranchi 78 is equipped with the latest Humphree electric stabilizer fin system. Compared to gyroscopes, they are more budgetary, operate without noise in all modes of movement and do not require the installation of an additional generator.
Compactness is not the only advantage of these engines. They increase maneuverability, produce a minimum of noise and vibration and finally allow the Settantotto to reach speeds of up to 33 knots with significant fuel economy. At a cruising speed of 23 knots, the yacht can cover about 400 miles without refueling, and up to 1,700 miles in displacement mode. Settantotto walks confidently and handles in a wide range of speeds, and then it all depends on how you feel about spending on fuel. According to tests, at 600 rpm, the flow rate for three engines is only 19 l / h, and at 33 nodes it rises to 560 l / h. Of course, no one goes at maximum speed all the time, but there is always an opportunity to escape from an impending storm.
Finally, the Settantotto is equipped with the latest Humphree electric fin stabilizer system, which works in sync with the same brand spoilers. Compared to gyroscopic stabilizers, fin stabilizers are noiseless in all driving modes and in the parking lot, 2.5 times cheaper, they even operate on 24 V batteries, without requiring the installation of an additional generator. Comfort is always ensured for you – whether the boat rushes over the waves or stands at anchor, while you enjoy your vacation in a beautiful bay.
