The first of the classic
76 ships representing 20 countries took yesterday at Antigua to start in the first of the classic 600-mile regattas of the year – RORC Caribbean 600.
The specificity of this race is that its route winds between 11th Caribbean islands.
The sensation with the plus sign was that the American maxi-trimaran MOD 70 Argo was able to take part in the race, which, as we told, turned over during the training three days before the regatta began. In this case, the organizers went to meet the skipper Argo Jason Carroll, who asked to give his team a few extra hours to repair and final inspection of the equipment. As a result, Argo started later than everyone else – along with Maserati Multi 70, Giovanni Soldini, who in this way supported a colleague who was in a difficult situation.
At the same time, there is a sensation with a “minus” sign: one of the main contenders for winning the regatta – Maxi72 Bella Mente of the American multimillionaire Hap Faut was an hour and a half after the start because of a breakdown was forced to return to Antigua Yacht Club.
Recall that the three yachts participating in the RORC Caribbean 600 have Russian skippers. These are Mikhail Maturev (Anna), Viktor Malakhov (Ivanka) and Yuri Fadeev (Optimus Prime).
