Such waves in the Mediterranean have not yet been seen!
During the storm Gloria, which caused trouble on the coast of Spain and the Balearic Islands last Monday, January 20, the highest waves were recorded in the entire history of observations in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to authorities cited by http://www.sailweb.co.uk, during a storm in the Valencia area, one of the waves was 8.44 meters high. This is a record indicator for waves in the Mediterranean Sea, officially recorded by instruments. (Prior to this, a 8.15-meter-high wave recorded in 2003 off the island of Menorca was considered a record.)
According to experts, this means that some waves during the storm could reach 13.5 meters!
At the same time, a buoy installed off the coast of the Balearic Islands also recorded a record: the height of one of the waves was 7.97 meters (the previous “achievement” – 6.33 meters – was established in 2017. According to scientists, waves in this area could reach a height of 14.2 meters!
