Competition International Women’s Match Race belong to a category 1 grade. The participants in the match-flight – ranked riders, which are the twenty strongest in the World Sailing. Among the participants of the regatta in Shanghai was the team of Pauline Courtois from France is number 1 in the ranking of WS. According to the rules of the competition, only three teams without a ranking could be among the participants. They were two of the Chinese team and the crew from Vladivostok skipper Catherine Tchachina: Anna Sannikova, Daria Istratov Stategov Alexander and Alexander officer Aniskina. Only race was attended by 12 teams from China, Korea, Sweden, Normandy, Switzerland and Russia. The regatta was held on the yacht of Far East 28 class R.
According to the format of match racing, crews of the 12 judges had to select the 8 most powerful. For this there were two round-Robin: in a series of short races, each crew met one-on-one with each of the crews of the rivals. At the end of each round-Robin was eliminated two of the weakest participant. The first four players are automatically passed to the next round. The rest of the crew played the 5-th to 8-th place.
After the first round Robin was eliminated two teams – Korea and China, after the second new Zealanders and another crew from China.
In the quarterfinals, our girls had to fight with the strongest team crew Pauline Courtois.
This day was the difficult weather conditions: winds up to 22 knots and more. The race Committee decided to hold the race. In recognition of our sailors, it was difficult, because in Vladivostok in this wind, the race is not carried out to protect materiel. As expected, many participants suffered multiple breakages, ripped sails.
“When on the second day the wind was blowing as well and had to go into the water, we already were afraid of nothing, – says Anna Sannikova. We have adapted to the boat, was assigned to the crew of the functionality and even caught the spirit. It was what is called the combat testing”.
The Russian team had a task to compete for the right to enter the top four, which participated in the final and the Grand final. It was necessary to bring his team a victory. But the victory in all three races was won by the French.
In fairness it should be noted that our girls raced for the first time on a boat of this class, and time to get acquainted with the boat they had only one training day before the race.
Following the results of competitions the crew of the Catherine Tchachina took 6th place out of 12. The winner of this match-flight became the French team. Second place went to the team of Johanna Bergqvist from Sweden, the third – the crew of the Celia of Willison from New Zealand.
