Canadian racing yacht Esprit de Corps IV class Volvo 60 (formerly Amer Sports One, in his time became the third in the Volvo Ocean race) died on the rocks during a stretch from the Caribbean back home to Canada.
Yacht owned by a Montreal company Atlas Ocean Racing, was returning home after a successful racing season in the Caribbean. On the approach to the harbour of Lunenburg on the boat came a sudden squall. The team did not have time to respond, and Grot flew to the other side. At the same time, probably broke the boom-sheet, as its end is wrapped around a propeller. The use of the engine became impossible and unmanageable yacht washed up on the rocks.
None of the crew was seriously injured, but after getting the insurance company recognized Esprit de Corps “unrecoverable”.
So gone is another of the once famous racing yacht…
