Like a snowball – 3
It would seem that all or almost all sailing competitions in the world have already been canceled or postponed. But no, not all. Every day new messages come.
So, today the participants of the round-the-world Clipper 2019-20 Race announced the decision of the organizers to interrupt – at least 10 months – this race, in which amateur teams participate.
A couple of weeks ago, we talked about how the Clipper Race fleet was faced with an almost insoluble problem: the participating yachts had to visit – one after the other – three ports in China, where at that moment the coronavirus epidemic was raging. In the end, it was decided: stopping in China was canceled, anchoring in Subic Bay (near Manila) on the Finnish island of Luzon and conducting several races there, after which, on March 21, heading across the ocean to Seattle.
Alas, I had to abandon the plan. Because, firstly, the quarantine regime was introduced already in Luzon. And secondly, a state of emergency is declared throughout the United States.
Nothing to do. Clipper 2019-20 Race, according to its participants, is interrupted for 10 months (in order to still visit Chinese cities, etc.). The only question is how do the same participants return to their homeland. Today it’s a big problem …
The organizers of the world's largest Optimist class regatta, the Garda Lake Meeting Optimist, which was due to take place on April 8-12, announced that the competition was postponed. The new preliminary dates for the regatta are June 11-14.
Last night, reports came of canceling the popular 935-mile regatta Antigua Bermuda Race. The traditional race was supposed to start on May 6.
Finally, yesterday, the British The Royal Western Yacht Club announced a decision to postpone the famous transatlantic race Ostar and Twostar, also scheduled for May, to 2021.
