Like a snowball – 2
Over the past day, the list of regattas, the organizers of which decided to cancel or postpone the competition, has increased again. And significantly.
Let's start with the decision of the owners of the rapidly growing popularity of the SailGP racing series to cancel the stage in San Francisco on May 2 – 3.
CEO of the series, the famous Russell Cutts said about this: “Of course, we are terribly upset, but we simply had no other choice. The health and safety of people is our first goal. We will certainly try to maintain the total number of SailGP stages this year, but it’s hard to say whether we can succeed or not. ”
Now about the America’s Cup – more precisely, from the first stage of the America's Cup World Series racing series, the first stage of which was to be held in Cagliari in Sardinia on April 23-26. But – it will not take place (naturally, due to the coronavirus pandemic), which was announced yesterday in the official communique by the host – the Italian team Luna Rossa.
Canceled – and canceled, the reader will decide. And it will be wrong, because the problem is much more complicated than it might seem.
Following the April stage of the series in Cagliari, another one is due to take place on June 4-7 in the English Portsmouth. But now, it turns out, he "suspended". Does it make sense for New Zealanders and Americans to drive their boats to faraway Europe, losing a ton of precious training time, for the sake of a single regatta, which, in turn, can in turn be canceled?
One thing is obvious: you need to radically change the America's Cup World Series calendar. Now the bosses of the America Cup are puzzling over this issue. And they honestly admit that they have no answer yet.
And here is the cancellation of the regatta, which directly relates to Russian yachtsmen. The board of directors of the prestigious 52 Series Super Series has decided to cancel the stage in Cape Town, which was scheduled to be held March 31 – April 4. At the same time, this stage was the 2020 World Cup. Now for the championship they will look for another living space.
The 5th stage of the SB20 Winter Series in Cascais (Portugal), scheduled for March 28 – 29, will not take place either.
The World Council of ILCA Class Yachts (until recently – Laser) decided that the 2020 ILCA Laser Masters World Championship in Geelong (Australia) will not be held. Before the regatta (March 21 – 28) it was already – a hand to sell, many riders managed to arrive in Australia, and then …
In general, little is left of the world regatta calendar. The utter defeat. Just think, all these troubles were brought by an unknown and invisible coronavirus. And after all, we have not said anything about the cancellation of numerous boat shows around the world! There is the same picture.
And here is the news in conclusion – so to speak, so that the picture is complete.
In connection with the spread of coronavirus, the International Sailing Federation – World Sailing – canceled its emergency general conference, which was to be held in London on May 2.
