Let's wait another year
It was announced that the first official offshore racing world championship will be held in October 2020 as part of the famous 600-mile Rolex Middle Sea Race.
As it is known, the International Sailing Federation – World Sailing – made a fundamental decision on holding such a championship in 2017.
The first tournament was originally scheduled for this year. However, now it is decided to postpone the holding of the offshore world championship. It will be held in October 2020 – within the 600-mile race of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, and its organizer, in addition to World Sailing, will be the Royal Maltese Yacht Club.
Depending on the weather conditions, the participants of the championship will be offered to go all 600 miles of the distance – or part of it.
The final decision on which courts the championship will take place has not yet been made. But it is known that these will be monotypes and that there will be exactly 20. On each yacht there are two participants, a man and a woman, representing the national team.
According to World Sailing President Kim Anderson, “The 2020 World Offshore Racing Championship will be the first step for offshore riders who dream of participating in the 2024 Olympics. We expect that the tournament will be for the teams a serious test of their skills in world-famous waters. ”
