The creators of the rating list of the strongest masters of a class “Star” decided to expand it to the Olympic classes (and then others) – and started with “Finn”.
First a bit of history. When in 2011, the international sailing Federation and the IOC made the decision about the exclusion of “Star” of the Olympic program, starting with the 2016 Games in Rio, it seemed to many that this is the beginning of the end of the famous class. But the opposite happened.
It took over the initiative group of yachtsmen-“Sveshnikov”, possessing a business acumen. They have carefully studied the experience of tennis, created in 1972, the network of tournaments, the ATP World Tour, and, in turn, created in 2013 something similar – set a sailing tournament called Star Sailors League (SSL).
I can’t believe it was five years ago. Because right now, the annual SSL finals in the Bahamas enjoys worldwide popularity, and World Sailing is included in its short list of the most important sailing events on the planet.
But the final SSL is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the plans of the leaders of the League, next year will be held in the world 220 (Yes, two hundred and twenty!) regattas at different levels in the class “Star” plus four regatta’s Grand Slam, which will be selected for the final.
Such selection is carried out, including using the rating. But the bosses SSL and then Napoleonic plans. They decided to turn their star – rating in the world. Include by 2020 representatives from the Olympic classes, and then all the rest. Do not know which algorithm is used, but the idea will agree, is excellent. So much so that this rating will in turn, work on the popularization of class “Star”.
The first combined rating of SSL included masters “Finn”, and the best of our – Vladimir Krutskikh – is there enough high 32nd position. And all Russian sailors as much as a hundred and fifty!
