St. Petersburg Yacht Club Launches Pilot Season of Sailing Events' Volunteers 2019 Large-Scale Volunteer Program
Volunteers have always participated in the events of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Voluntary assistants played an important role during the mass competitions of the Academy of sailing, actively participated in the activities of the Shipyard of historical shipbuilding "Poltava". And the most representative international regattas held by the yacht club such as Extreme Sailing Series, Nord Stream Race, World Match Racing Tour and Sailing Champion League have always attracted volunteers to participate.
“It’s not a secret to anyone that attracting volunteers to an event organizer requires expenses – people need to be equipped, instructed, and provided with working conditions,” says Elena Solovyova, the head of the SPBC project group. “However, the participation of volunteers is of great strategic importance – the volunteers create an atmosphere of hospitality and friendliness, they help translate the values and meanings for which the event is being held – a regatta, a race, a festival. For decades, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club has been working to preserve the best traditions of sailing, spread the ideas of a healthy lifestyle, values of high achievements and form the image of Russia and St. Petersburg as leaders in the modern technological world. ”
In the fall of 2018, Elena Solovyova, head of the SPACS project group, suggested systematizing the accumulated experience and creating a system for attracting, training and effectively including volunteers in project teams. In 2019, four major sailing projects of the Yacht Club were chosen as the training ground for the volunteer program: the largest offshore regatta in the Baltic Nord Stream Race, the main European competition of club teams Sailing Champion League, the St. Petersburg World Racing Championship junior in the Olympic class RS: X.
In total, for four regattas, it is planned to recruit, train and engage in the solution of organizational problems of these four regattas about 100 volunteers.
Volunteers will perform tasks in technical support teams and hospitality services. A separate category of volunteers will consist of "liaison officers" – a team of Liaison officers. This kind of organizational support has evolved within the regatta of training sailboats (The Tall Ships' Races, Cutty Sark, Operation Sail). Liaison Officer is a volunteer who is given to one of the participating teams. It helps guests to feel in a strange city "at home", and also provides communication between participants of the regatta and the organizing committee.
The volunteer program of 2019 starts in February – invitations to the team will be placed in the youth sailing teams and in the universities of the city. In March, there will be two setup presentation meetings. The volunteer candidates will learn more about the regattas, the organizers' requirements and what bonuses they expect at the end of the season. In April and May, participants in the program will receive training in a special program, including sailing practice. In the summer months, volunteers who have successfully completed training will find themselves in the heart of the brightest sailing events of St. Petersburg. It is planned to sum up in September. According to the results of this season, the methodology and program of attracting volunteers for the next three years will be formulated.
Actual information about the project is published in the group of social networks "Vkontakte" https://vk.com/ycspbvolunteer
We invite everyone to volunteer to the installation meetings on March 2 and 23, 2019, beginning at 14.00!
