ClassMini 5.80 became a sensation
The presentation of the new ClassMini 5.80 yachts, which was supposed to take place last Saturday during the HISWA Boat Show in Amsterdam, did not take place – for the simple reason that the exhibition was closed on Friday night (as you might guess – because of the coronavirus).
But even without a presentation, ClassMini 5.80 became a sensation: more than three hundred (!) Sail lovers have already contacted class founder Don McIntyre with a question – when will the sale of a package of drawings of the yacht begin. This package, by the way, will cost only 300 euros.
Here it is worth recalling some facts. Don MacIntyre – the organizer of the Golden Globe Race singles round-the-world races (the next will take place in September 2022), as well as the Ocean Globe Race-2023 – round-the-world round-trips in honor of the 50th anniversary (1973) of the first Whitbread Round the World Race (this race will be able to take part yachts built no later than 1988).
And now, MacIntyre has prepared another sensation. Because in the autumn of 2024, according to his plans, the round-the-world Mini Globe Race should start on Mini 5.80 class yachts, which will leave from one of the European ports around the world – to the West, through the Panama Canal, and then along the route: Marquise Islands – Tahiti – Tonga – Kupang (a city in Indonesia in West Timor) – Mauritius – Cape Town – Cape Verde – and the finish is somewhere in Europe.
The whole route around the world will be divided into 6 stages with short – in a few days – stops for rest and repair. The approximate race length is 26,400 nautical miles. It is planned that it can be overcome in 400 days.
The first yacht of the new class is now being built by its developer – the Polish yachtsman Janusz Madersky. Ship testing is due to begin in June. Note that the design is simple and reliable at the same time. According to MacIntyre, it will be possible to build a yacht on your own in about 500 hours.
“We are amazed that the idea of this yacht alone aroused such interest among sail lovers,” McIntyre said in an interview with www.sail-world.com. – We are contacted by clubs and schools, many ordinary sail lovers, but at the same time, well-known masters who are tired of technological innovations and want to relax by transferring to a very simple boat. Well, this little boat has a really big heart. And I’m sure a great future! ”
