Champion at 81!
At the end of February, we announced the record of 81-year-old Australian Bill Hetfield: he became the oldest yachtsman to make a single and non-stop sailing trip around the world. True, such records are not officially recorded. But it turns out that this achievement was not limited to.
Yesterday, the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) ratified Hatfield's purely sporting achievement: it circled the world from east to west – against the prevailing winds and currents on a yacht less than 40 feet in 258 days, 22 hours 24 minutes and 9 seconds (with an average speed of 3.48 knots)!
Recall that Hatfield on a 38-foot (11.6-meter) yacht L'Eau Commotion took off on June 8 last year in his native Australian city of Gold Coast. According to his own words, he dreamed of traveling around the world from the age of 7. But he began to realize his dream only after retiring. Three attempts to make such a journey (in 2015 – 2017) ended in failure (and twice – at Cape Horn). And now, finally, everything turned out.
