"Battleship" gets the bronze medal of the world championship TP52 in Spain

On August 29, in Puerto Portals in Mallorca, the TP52 world championship ended, which was also the fourth stage of 52SuperSeries. According to the results of the competition, the German Platoon team won. For the first time in the history of participation in TP52 world championships, the crew of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club won a bronze medal.

As expected, the final day of the World Cup was the most stressful, because the teams up to the seventh line of the standings (where the current world champions, the Quantum Racing Americans were) had a theoretical chance to take the gold from the Platoon Germans leading at that time. Accordingly, it was the German team that was on the spot for everyone, and it seemed that the nerves could not stand it. The Mueller-Spreer crew received the first fine in the pre-launch procedure of the first race of the day. He was followed by two more fines during the day and two penalty points for a collision with Quantum Racing.

Looking ahead, it should be said that, despite the difficulties, the Germans were already very good in this championship. Let the final day be the most unlucky for them, the safety margin was enough to become world champions for the second time (the first gold in 2017).

It was also a hectic day for the titled Italians Azzurra. The Costa Smeralda Yacht Club team also spent a bad day, but there was just enough margin to get ahead of all rivals by one point and hold the second line. This is the second silver of the World Cup in a row for Italians (and in total Azzurra has a lot more titles in TP52).

Well, the Turkish-British Provezza became the star of the day. As you know, the boat of the Turks lost its mast in the first race of the first day. The crew managed to deliver their old mast to the competition site, install it (using parts borrowed from other teams) and go the distance. Yes, it’s not easy to leave – the team of Ergin Imre amazed everyone with the best result of the day, 1 and 3 parishes! Unfortunately for Provezza the baggage of the glasses was too heavy – the final ninth place.

Anticipating exceptional competition on the water, the Battleship crew continued to follow a proven strategy. Moreover, the wind was very light, no more than 6-7 knots – not the most favorable conditions for the Battleship. The team was conservative at the starts and acted as cautiously as possible. True, this did not help in the first race. From all indications, the Battleship appeared to go round the five, but a sudden change in the wind pushed the blue boat into the tail of the fleet. With difficulty managed to finish seventh.

In the second (final, ninth) race, things went better – fourth on the first mark and fourth on the finish. Such a result saved a bronze medal for the Battleship with a minimal advantage over Sled from the New York Yacht Club.

“We opened the championship with the seventh result and finished third – this is a long way that the team has traveled over four days,” said Vladimir Lyubomirov, skipper of the Bronenosets team. – Our medal is really deserved, we fought for every meter of the distance with the most titled teams of the planet and withstood incredible pressure! “The medals of the season are at stake – and we feel confident that we can compete for them!”

The medal of the World Cup 2019 is the first in the career of the Battleship and the second this year. Previously, bronze was won by the results of the second stage in Porto Sherry. Thus, before the final stage of the series, “Battleship” came close to the first three of the overall classification of the season 52SuperSeries 2019. Everything will be decided at the end of September in Porto Cervo.
