81-year-old Australian bill Hatfield became the oldest yachtsman who committed a single non-stop round the world voyage under sail.
The previous record from September of last year belonged to residents of Canada the British woman Jeanne Socrates, who, we recall, has completed the circumnavigation when she was 77 years old.
In his native Donegal, where Hatfield 8 June last year took the start on the boat L’eau Commotion with a length of 38 feet (11.6 meters), it returned on Saturday. Thus, the Odyssey, the Aussie continued a few more than eight months. We emphasize that Hafild chose the difficult route and went from East to West – against the prevailing winds and currents.
According to Hatfield, who has spent his life connected to the sea (he was a professional fisherman), on a voyage round the world he had dreamed of since the age of 7 years. But realizing the dream started, only after retiring. Three attempts to make the journey (in 2015 – 2017 years) ended in failure (and twice off Cape horn). And now, finally, it all came together.
Journalists who met Hatfield, the traveler asked the traditional question: what are his plans. The response followed immediately:
My daughter has just promised to pull on me if I will go on a new journey. So some time I spend at home.
