Are the new dates realistic?
Kentaro Iwata, a professor at Kobe University, one of Japan’s largest virologists, said he was “extremely pessimistic” about the possibility of hosting the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
According to the Japan Times, Iwata explained his position in this way: “Two conditions are necessary for holding the Olympic Games. Firstly, it is necessary to ensure complete control over COVID-19 in Japan. Secondly, to guarantee the same control over COVID-19 in the rest of the world. So, I’m sure that in Japan we will solve this problem by the beginning of the Olympics in the summer of 2021. But I’m not at all sure that it will be possible to solve it all over the world. ”
Recall that by the decision of the International Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee of the Games in Tokyo, the new dates for the Olympics are from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
