…And stood for repair

A trip around the world famous yacht Maiden had to be interrupted after just 36 hours after launch – due to “unforeseen problems”. The ship is forced to turn to Plymouth to embark on the repair.

Recall those who do not know, what is this Maiden and the yacht is interesting. 58-foot Maiden came to prominence almost three decades ago, when he took part in the round the world Whitbread Round the World Race 1989/90. On Board were the first in the history of the popular race (now Volvo Ocean Race) and generally all-female yachting crew, led by Briton Tracy Edwards. And they not only managed to go through the whole round-the-world distance, but to win two stages of the six!

In preparation for the Whitbread and during the race the team was experiencing significant financial problems, and after the finish of Tracy Edwards had a boat to sell. Maiden has changed several owners, and then its traces completely lost. The yacht was found in 2014 on one of the Islands of the Seychelles archipelago, and it was in deplorable condition.

And that’s when Edwards decided to restore it. Work started in 2016, lasted two years and was funded by the Jordanian Princess Haya bint al-Hussein and her family. Days Maiden (on Board again purely female crew!) went from Southampton to India – it was the first stage of round the world travel with a total length of 54,000 nautical miles, the purpose of which – the promotion of educational programmes for girls from different countries.

But the journey, as you already know, was short-lived. How serious is the repair and when the boat will be at sea, the British press reported.
