52 SUPER SERIES: A Milestone
Gusts of more than 40 knots in open water and 33 knots in the harbor of Porto Cervo caused the cancellation of races on September 24 – the first day of the final stage of 52SuperSeries. The famous Mistral has gained strength and will hold the Costa Smeralda coast hostage for several more days.
The already official Audi 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week training race a day earlier was held in fresh winds. Accordingly, the abolition of races was no surprise to anyone. But given the density of the standings of the season, the reduction in the number of races adds to the tension.
Having finished in the third line of the season 2018, the Italian Azzurra spent the current season on a high note and approached the start of the final stage as the leader of the standings. Let the gap from the newly made world champions, the German Platoon team, amount to an insignificant six points, Italians are counting on the help of the “home” water area.
In turn, the Germans seem to be at their peak and the recent World Cup in Mallorca, which took place in August, confirms this. The Mueller-Spreer team won gold even with two penalty points – an incredible margin of safety. In addition, Platoon won the first stage of the season in Menorca and was stable in the top three in the rest, except for the stage in Puerto Sherry (fourth line). There is no doubt that the silver medalist of the 2017 and 2018 seasons will try to achieve the long-awaited gold, and the chances of the German team are huge.
Losing five more points to the Germans on the third line of the standings of the 2019 season, the titled American Quantum is located. This season, the crew of the DeVos family appears unstable, stage medals alternate with failed performances. Purely by tradition, the winners of the 2018 season are still in the top three, but they no longer look as invincible as before.
And here is a chance for the team of the Battleship Yacht Club of St. Petersburg. The crew of Vladimir Lyubomirov holds the most successful season for all the performances in the series – two medals in the four stages that took place, including the bronze of the recent World Cup (the first medal for Russia in the TP52 World Cup in nine years!).
“Of course, the loss of the race day at the final stage of the series is very annoying,” says Vladimir Lyubomirov, “Bronenosets” steering team, “but everything is in the same conditions, and the one who will remain calm at the decisive moment will win.”
According to the committee’s plans, the second-day races of the Audi 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week will be given one hour earlier to make three starts.
