15 teams – and among them Russia
15 teams from 12 countries have already submitted applications for participation in the America's Youth Cup. Among them – for the first time! – team of Russia.
The organizers of this prestigious youth competition are the current owner of the America's Cup – the Emirates Team New Zealand team, as well as the yacht club where this team is based – Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland.
Youth Cup participants will perform on specially designed AC9F class 9-meter single-hull winged yachts (the first boat will be launched in the coming days). These vessels will be provided to the teams by the organizers of the draw. In accordance with the regulations, the crew of each boat consists of four people (two boys and girls 18-24 years old), whose total weight cannot exceed 311 kg.
Here are the 15 teams whose entries have already been approved by the organizers:
– Australia (2 teams)
– Hong Kong
– New Zealand (2)
– Russia (the PROyachting Skolkovo Team, organized by the PROyachting Yacht Club and SKOLKOVO Sailing Club, has been announced).
– Switzerland (2)
The list, by the way, is by no means final. Applications will be accepted until September 30 of this year.
The first – qualification – stage of the races of the youth "America's Cup" is due to take place in China this November. True, because of the coronavirus epidemic, the exact place and date of its holding have not yet been announced. During this phase, 20 teams will be selected to continue the fight.
The next stage, during which the top 10 teams will be determined, will be held in Auckland in February 2021. And, finally, the decisive round of races will take place during the match for the “adult” America's Cup on March 8–12 of the same year and, of course, in Auckland.
