Yesterday in Falmouth celebrated the 50th anniversary of the completion of sir Robin Knox-Johnston the world’s first single non-stop circumnavigation under sail, and its victory in the Golden Globe race.
As half a century ago, Sir Robin entered the harbour of Falmouth on her famous 32-foot boat Suhaili. This time he was accompanied by hundreds of boats and ships of the Royal Navy great Britain HMS Mersey.
In 15.25 – at the very moment when 50 years ago Suhaili crossed the finish line, the battle turned on the siren. And on the shore, which brought together thousands of fans of sails (including those who once met Knox-Johnston from around the world), there was an explosion of applause.
